Does anyone else give a shit about the Little League World Series? I fucking love that goddamn tournament and have only missed two years since 1997. Just feels like the purest form of the sport these days outside of kids lying about their age and all.

Unfortunately due to COVID, it's U.S. only this year but outside of missing the masters of fundamentals Japan, I'm still pretty stoked for it.

I was going to mention earlier but the site was down due to trannies:

Chris Davis finally announced his retirement today, finally letting O's fans breathe a sigh of relief that they'll never have to watch him strikeout again. He's still owned $23 million for next season as it was the last year of the contract he's on, but it appears it'll be paid out in installments over a number of years.

Today is the 'Field of Dreams' game between the Yankees and White Sox. It's been pretty neat with a couple of homers into the corn. The whole scene looked really good as the sun was setting. The players (after Kevin Costner) emerged from the corn before the game which was neat/cheesy. It's 7-4 for Chicago heading into the 8th right now.

Even with (slight) COVID restrictions and the Mets barely hanging on with a winning record in their division, the “Field of Dreams” night with the Yanks and White Sox seemed like a nice touch.

Looking at it on TV today made me think I was watching a real baseball game for once, and actively ignoring all of the outside things like current events and politics.

Wow, that was a pretty crazy ending for the Yanks/White Sox 'Field of Dreams' game.

7-4 to start the 9th and Chicago brings in Liam Hendriks to close it. First pitch in facing the #9 hitter Tyler Wade goes for a single to the outfield. He then strikes out DJ LeMahieu and Brett Gardner. With two outs Aaron Judge crushes a two-run bomb to right-centre to make it 7-6. Joey Gallo draws a walk, and Giancarlo Stanton follows it up with a two-run homer to left to take an 8-7 lead. In the bottom half Zack Britton gets the first batter out, walks the catcher, and then gives up a two-run walk off homer to right off the bat of Tim Anderson to end the game.

I went from "motherfucking" the screen in the top of the 9th to screaming my lungs out after Timmy launched that ball into the corn.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

If Hawaii makes it far enough I watch their games. Partially because of state pride, partially because I think their teams usually have the fundamentals down better than any other US team and because of that they usually crush all the US team and/or make very deep runs in the tournament if they're on their game. I don't think this years team is on par with the 2018 championship team (neither was the 2019 team) but its only the regionals so far.

Also because it's US only, two teams from each region qualify instead of one so if you make to the championship game you're already in, you just get placed in separate brackets depending on winner/loser (so no real need to watch that if you're just a casual). And some teams got kicked out of their regionals altogether for having positive COVID tests (though a few like Hawaii were able to stay...have no clue what the criteria was) so some got an easier schedule. It'll be interesting how they'll handle uniforms and all that in Williamsport since they usually wear ones representing their region, not state LL.

Yeah, there's the shitty ump strike zones which I'm ehhhh about and the chaos ball, but I think the chaos ball makes it more exciting.

EDIT - Other random thoughts:

Saw on the ESPN ticker that a pitcher from South Dakota or something almost had like 2 perfect games or something. Insane.

Super annoying any time ESPN has to overhype up a girl player on a team even if she's no Mo'ne Davis. The "girl power" shtick gets tiring very quickly.

That was a hell of a game. Sad Yankees didn't win but that ending can't be too bad.

Ngl when they walked on field to start looked at Mrs IM NOT CRYING YOURE CRYING! that was really something special.

Lol the O's are going full Bobby Bonilla and they're going to be paying Davis into the mid 2030s. At least the Wilpons had a Madoff scheme to fall back on as an excuse.

Tyler Gilbert (literally who) just finished up a no-no against the Padres, making it 8 for the year league-wide, a new MLB record. This was Gilbert's first MLB start.

The Diamondbacks might be an absolute joke this year, but something really special just happened in the desert: Tyler Gilbert, a 27 year old rookie making his 1st start and 4th appearance, just no-hit the Padres. It's the first time since 1953 that a pitcher threw a no-hitter in his first career start. He only averaged about 89mph on his fastball and only punched out 4 batters (one of which was San Diego's starting pitcher) on just 102 pitches. He gave up three walks, all to Tommy Pham (the first one actually started off the game.)

Edit: it just hit a minute ago that I forgot to mention that Gilbert threw a 3 pitch inning for the 8th inning. He was the fourth pitcher to achieve that this season, and it was the second time this year that San Diego was the victim.

Reading a bit more about Gilbert, he was a Rule 5 pick by Arizona this year and literally just got called up on August 3rd. This article has a lot of the particulars, but he was with the Dodgers organization prior to the Rule 5 draft and when Arizona wanted to send him down, they paid $24k to the Dodgers to not have to send him back to their system due to Rule 5 restrictions. What a world.

Edit: The Astros broadcast was talking a bit about Gilbert and they said he was working as an electrician last year due to the minors being suspended because of covid. This shit is going to be a documentary considering the foreign substance crackdown. I could be wrong, but I think this is the first no hitter since that.

Lol so the Astros traded Myles Straw to Cleveland for Phil Maton, a decent relief pitcher, at the deadline and it honestly confused me. Straw is basically a speed first centerfielder, who's gotten better defensively and limited his strikeouts, but has like no power at all. A poor man's Kenny Lofton, but he's shown that he's an MLB regular this year.

Well his replacement, Jake Meyers, just cranked his first two career homers tonight, the second of which was a grand slam. This is the smallest of small sample sizes, but if Meyers (and Chas McCormick to a lesser extent) are MLB caliber hitters with decent gloves in center, our window might expand more.

I'll always have a soft spot for Hawaii teams after their epic comeback against Curacao in 2005. I will never forget those little West Indies kids dancing and celebrating before the final inning and then crying their eyes out against the dugout net after Hawaii completed the comeback. The very definition of thrill of victory, agony of defeat.

Looks like they have another good team going to Williamsport this year, definitely one of the favorites along with Louisiana, Tennessee, and Florida I believe. Shame that their ambidextrous pitcher is skipping out due to prior commitments to a travel team, as lame as that sounds. South Dakota, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey could be dark horses as well.

Don't mind the widened strike zone but the inconsistency is absolutely maddening. It shouldn't be any more than a ball length off the black but you're still getting called strikes that are grazing the opposing batters box. As for uniforms, I guess we're either going to see a lot of inverse color ways or they're going to let the region champs get a choice of usual colors or stealing an international color and distribute it that way.

You're right about the Mo'Ne Davis shit too. Japan had already done the same a decade earlier but of course it doesn't matter if it's not a black American. Closest thing I saw to Powerful Woman was Delaware's manager but her team blew a three run lead in the final inning to miss out on a spot in the World Series.

Can't wait to see all the how do you do fellow kids stuff ESPN has in store though, like Favorite Memes etc.

MLB announced today that next year's Field of Dreams game (yeah, they're going to ruin this and make it feel less and less special to the surprise of no one) will be between the Reds and Cubs on August 11th.

Some other notes from around the league today:
  • speaking of the two teams above, Joey Votto recorded his 2,000th career hit today at home against the Cubs

  • former and recent Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel recorded his 1,000th career strikeout while facing the A's

  • recently released Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta didn't spend much time as a free agent as he signed with the Padres

  • Cole Hamels' Dodgers signing isn't going to work out as he was put on the 60-day IL with shoulder soreness

  • David Robertson signed a Major League deal with the Rays (tomorrow is actually the two year anniversary of his TJ surgery; he played for Team USA in the Olympics this year)

I wish LLWS would upload more full game archives of their past games. They did upload a good handful last year to make up for cancelling the tournament but I felt it was sorta random in terms of years and teams (was nice to grab some games featuring Hawaii teams that I couldn't find on YouTube though). The only clips left from the 2005 championship game I could find are low quality TV recordings of the comeback inning and the walk off from YouTube. They must have the full game in HD since they also uploaded a compilation video of the last plays of the tournament from 1998-2019 and the walkoff clip was the most high quality I've seen for a recording from 2005. Would love to see old regional tournament games too. Maybe privacy issues with kiddies though or copyright or something, idk.

I also like the Hawaii teams since they're (typically) so humble and don't let the fame or pressure get to their heads. Like the New Jersey kid from the last LLWS who kept doing that stupid dance after getting on base...really annoyed me.

Yeah, it is too bad. I'm sure Jomboy would've done a clip on him or something. Although as much as it is impressive, in the limited game time I saw of him I felt it didn't make a huge impact and I felt he still had some control issues, but I don't claim to be a baseball expert. Don't know anything about the dark horses but I kind of just let the scoreboard speak for themselves. Like I remember times where the ESPN commentators would be all like "oh X team is so good, they're on a perfect run" or "they have X player who threw a no hitter the other day or Y player who was a beast in regionals" and then Hawaii would come along and just shut them down.

Sounded like one of the Delaware pitchers was also prematurely celebrating, too. Can't be doing that, especially in little league.

Hawaii teams have a fun bonus of commentators continually butchering Hawaiian pronunciations. Favorite emojis and the flossing were also pretty bad last year, though it also gave me my favorite LLWS commentary clip.

(Wasn't really fond of David Ross as a commentator tbh, but now he's busy managing the Cubs, so yay?)

Besides the ESPN cringe, what do you think of how the game has changed (format, pitch count, bats, team quality, etc.) since the late 90s? (And I suppose will change in the future with the expansion to 20 teams and new regions.)

Not many starters last 15 years in the MLB. I wouldn't be surprised if this is it for him.

The man chose to sit out last year when he signed with the Braves. He hasn't pitched in two full seasons. I know baseball contracts are different from NFL, but do MLB players still get paid their full contract if they don't even make a start for the year they signed? If they do, this shit feels like a scam.

Nevermind, he pitched all of one 3 1/3 inning start for the Braves then fucked off to the injured list. The man's shoulder is shot.

Jack Morris suspended by Bally Sports Detroit for remarks about Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani

Basically, Jack Morris, former pitcher and (until recently) color commentator got fired from his commentator role after apparently "racist" remarks. Well what was this extreme display of racism so bad he got let go?

He is doing the Elmer Fudd voice here, specifically referencing this very famous line.

Bally sports probably made him apologize for nothing immediately after, even though it couldn't save his job.

Apparently Shohei didn't even care, go figure.

I would understand it at least if he actually had said some edgy shit, if Ohtani got a hit and he said something like "Shohei Ohtani, the only Asian who can drive well!" The problem is he didn't, and you can not prove that he had any sort of racist intent.

People can't seem, to be able to understand that their immediate reaction to something may not be completely right. I hate baseball fans on the internet :(

I don't think that he was doing an Elmer Fudd thing, I think he was clearly doing an Asian impression. With that said, yeah it shouldn't be a big deal. If someone did an impression of Liam Hendriks it wouldn't be an issue. If someone did an impression of a white player from Alabama it wouldn't be an issue. If someone did an impression of a Canadian player (apparently we all say "Hoser" and physically can not stop eating poutine while doing so) it wouldn't be a big deal, etc. I know the difference, I'd be told, is that Asians are oppressed or something in the US which to that I'd simply raise an eyebrow at.

Anyways, Morris fucked up. Not in that he did anything worthy of being tarred and feathered by Twitter users who couldn't tell you which state the Angels play their home games in, but in that he should have known that we're not a serious society and will act like this is tantamount to beating an Asian to death with a wok.

In news that I meant to share earlier, something people should maybe actually have moral outrage over: Felipe Vázquez, former All-Star closer of the Pirates was sentenced to two-to-four years in prison (he's been serving since September of 2019 so he could be out on parole by next month.) In May 2021, he was convicted on fifteen counts: ten counts of sexual abuse of children, two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, one count of statutory sexual assault, one count of corruption of a minor, and one count of indecent assault of someone under 16 years old for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl. He's still facing charges in Florida and Missouri; Florida prosecutors allege he continued to have sex with the Pennsylvania victim after she moved to Florida, while he’s facing child pornography charges in Missouri after allegedly exchanging sexually explicit messages with the victim during a road series in St. Louis.

From a pure baseball perspective: damn, between him and Roberto Osuna (still just 26, MLB career *likely* ended last year at 25) that's a couple of really good young arms who just nuked their careers like fucking morons. The former was setting himself up to maybe be a Hall of Famer down the line, but Vázquez (just turned 30 last month, MLB career ended at 28 years old) was no slouch as one of the best lefty bullpen arms in the game.
