The Rays dealt Luke Motherfucking Raley for some beaner who had 1 more year of team control than him (5 v 6).

I'm legit angry. I know this is what they do but it doesn't make it any easier
 
On the topic of the Rays, I didn't see anyone mention that they traded Tyler Glasnow (and Manuel Margot) to the Dodgers about a week before Christmas. Glasnow then signed a four-year extension for $111,562,500.

Just before New Year's Eve the Red Sox sent Chris Sale to the Braves for infielder Vaughn Grissom. Sale then signed a two-year extension for $38 million. Boston then went and signed Lucas Giolito to a two-year deal worth $38.5 million a few days ago.

Yesterday saw Seattle send Robbie Ray to the Giants for Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani, and long time outfielder Michael Brantley announced his retirement.

Kind of expected the Glasnow trade, but the Chris Sale trade surprised me. Boston got a good return with Grissom but signing Giolito for a 2 year/38.5 deal when Sale got a 2 year extension for 500k less? On paper that's a major front office negotiation blunder.

Seattle-San Fran: I have no clue what the Giants are doing this off season. It seems once the Ohtani sweepstakes died down, they just gave up, but the trade for Robbie Ray was fair. Haniger is a great platoon player, but he had a down year last year batting just above the Mendoza line. DeSclafani can be serviceable, but keeping him in as SP could go either way. I'd rather have him as a sixth man out of the bullpen rather than part of the starting 5.

Of all things, this one sounded like a surprise to me. Red Sox was on a decent streak, but what they're about to do may be a recipe for disaster
 
Re: Chris Sale, he hadn't exactly been the star that was promised. If the Braves manage to keep him healthy, it was a steal. If he continues his Looney Tunes-esque string of injuries and continues to miss starts like he has for the past five seasons, then good riddance. The man was days away for making his return the the major league roster after missing half the season due to injury and then fell off his goddamn bike and reinjured himself.

Bo Bichette's hitting profile is more like Vladdy Sr's than Vladdy Jr's.

He's a free swinging, bad ball hitter with excellent bat-to-ball skills.

Everyone was shitting on Vlad last year for having such a down year, but the same goldfish-memory fans forget that they were ready to run Bichette out of town with his terrible first half in '22.

Bichette's value is mostly tied up in his balls in play, because he's allergic to walks and his defense has always been suspect.

You hear a lot less about his below-average defense at SS when he's hitting well. Hard to tell if it's just a halo effect or he's improved enough to not be MLB-embarassing.

Teoscar Hernandez went through a similar thing pre-COVID where his glove was considered unplayable in the OF and people considered him a DH.

Then he started hitting 30 bombs a year in his late 20s and no one called him a butcher anymore.
 
Fun time of year with SB this weekend and then P&C starting next week. Then there is a bit of a lull until the real games start. Spring training is only exciting for about a week or so imo. Anybody going down to AZ or Florida? I've been to numerous games in Arizona it's always a fun time. Weather is perfect that time of year there so just sitting on the lawn during a game is refreshing.

Probably not going, but I have been to Florida for spring training and I enjoyed the games. Notably I saw some of those Braves superstars before their first major league games: Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuña Jr.

yup, it's a great way to see the youngsters before they are stars. The players are so relaxed compared to the regular season you get much more fan interaction. We used to go to to florida for spring training when I played college baseball (D3 so low level) and I always hated how muggy it was. Arizona is a better spot imo. The parks are also much closer together in AZ.
 
Saw a video of Edwin Diaz throwing yesterday and I'm ready for baseball. As a Mets fan I'm pissed sherzer was able to jump out of a boat he was actively sinking and got a ring. It also bummed me out DeGrom got his 1st championship without throwing a single pitch.
 
The next City Connect jerseys have been announced today. The Guardians, Tigers, Dodgers, Twins, Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, Rays, and Blue Jays will all get the new uniforms. I'm hopeful for my Guards to get a good uniform. The City Connect jerseys have been hit or miss for me, but I do enjoy seeing some different uniforms that aren't throwbacks.
