Francisco Lindor apparently passed Derek Jeter over the weekend for 4th place all-time for career HRs at SS at age 31.

I would never have guessed that Cal Ripken is the all-time leader (for HRs hit while actually playing the SS position), ahead of Alex Rodriguez by only 1. But I suppose A-Rod ended up moving off SS for good for Jeter when he went to the Yankees.

I suppose it's a funny record because it requires players to compile HRs when they are young because SS is a young man's game and you will eventually be moved off of it in your 30s.

Most of the HR leaders at SS are relatively modern guys. The only old hat guy who I never saw play was Ernie Banks. And apparently he moved off SS to play 1B halfway through.

I don't know how true it is, but I saw claims that Lindor is one of the oldest starting SS in the league at 31.

Using the powers of autism and Baseball Reference, I'm averaging the age of all SS with the most plate appearances (I will be checking whether utility/bench players get more starts at SS). For IL players, I will be using the injured player's age but for being sent down to AAA, I will use the replacement player's age.

The average age is 26.63. The most common age is actually 23 years old (the lowest) with the youngest of the bunch being Jacob Wilson, a first-round pick for the A's. What brought up the average was 8 players being 30+ years old with the oldest being Xander Bogaerts at 32 years and 245 days old. If we exclude IKF, JP Crawford and the defensive wizard Dansby Swanson, the trend is that all ofr the 30 year olds still starting are established stars: Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, Corey Seager, Trea Turner, and Trevor Story (despite his injury woes).

In conclusion, there is some truth to SS being a young position (as common sense would suggest) and since I'm not cross-referencing any more dates, Lindor is definitely one of the 8 oldest starting shortstops in the league

I learned over the weekend that rookie As phenom Jacob Wilson (who is hitting something like .345 and challenging for the batting title) is the son of former MLB Pirates shorstop Jack Wilson.

Genetics for the win.

Just off the top of my head, nepo babies on the Jays (or until fairly recently) included Vlad Jr, Bo Bichette, Daulton Varsho and Cavan Biggio until last year.

This contrasts to other funky ways that guys get discovered and make the show

- Current starting 3B on the Jays Addison Barger is a missionary homeschooled rich kid. Before high school when he was 14 or so, his rich dad built a baseball diamond on their property and then imported an entire traveling team's worth of Dominican tweens for 30k for two months to live in their garage because Barger was still being homeschooled and didn't have a school team to play on.

- Short, pudgy, slowest footed catcher Alejandro Kirk was discovered by some rando Toronto scout in a Mexican semipro league when he went to scout another player but cannoball Kirk stood out. He had to lobby the front office to offer Kirk a contract by prefacing everything with "but he phat". The main reason they signed Kirk was because they'd blown their entire international signing pool on Vlad Jr. the year before and were under penalty the next year, not being able to sign any of the actual top talent guys.

Reminds me of how much of a dawg Edgar Martinez was. He had just finished a gruelling overnight shift at a factory job and felt like he couldn't swing the bat anymore during his walk-in tryouts. Somehow, he still impressed Seattle enough to get signed and the rest was history
 
The Rockies are now a robust 12-50 with 100 games left in the season. They completed a three game series sweep of the Marlins today to achieve their first series sweep since May of last year.

Boston is sending third baseman/designated hitter Rafael Devers to to the Giants for starting pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, along with two prospects (22 year old outfielder James Tibbs who was the 13th overall pick last summer, and 20 year old pitcher Jose Bello.)

Added interest is that the two teams begin a series on Friday in San Francisco.

Holy shit I didn't think they could move that big of a contract so soon. Obviously they are talking about it on the Sunday night game, it's the Giants vs Dodgers. Maybe i'm crazy but Jeff Passan's shelf/background really bugs me. It's been the same for a while... just a really intentional yet trashy looking smattering of pop culture items records, NES, some baseball stuff. It looks like garbage. This is TV and your average podcaster's shit looks nicer. I like music too but if I was a talking head on sports I would have all sports stuff behind me not 6 random record albums, ten books, 4 NES games. One box of cards, one bobblehead. He looks like a poser is all i'm saying, take the ESPN money and buy some cooler shit to put behind you Jeff.

I don't even know how to feel about the trade. We suck either way but I guess the upside here is we clear some space and work towards the future with our prospects and some decent pick ups in FA or through trades. I will say though, for being one of the biggest clubs in baseball it gets real god damn frustrating that we can't stay consistent on the field and our front office/management can't ever seem to get their shit sorted long-term. The Red Sox are a fucking yo-yo club and I hate it.

It's a win for the Red Sox, they got rid of the whole contract plus have a return. They are not contending and he was not happy there.
