Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

A friend got me MW5 to play with him...

The UI is like straight out of a SNES game. I think Wing Commander's Super Nintendo port had a legitimate better UI than this game. Everything looks and feels like a step down from MechWarrior Online, if that's fucking possible. There's no sense of weight to anything, the paper doll sucks ass, you can barely tell when you get hit, there's no vibration in the cockpit when you get hit. You can barely even tell if you run into something. The sound design sucks. The voice acting is garbage. I like the menu background music but it's such a short loop that it doesn't take long to get annoying. Not being able to have your own character or mech on co op sucks as well, as well as the lack of progression for anyone but the host.

This has been on EGS a full year and yet right now I feel like I'm playing an alpha of a game.

Anyone who bought this at $40 is a fucking sucker.

The thing is, when I saw VTOLs in hard vacuum, my first reaction was "Well, this is a fucking stupid mistake, but they can easily patch it out, it's a new game after all" before I realized that the game has been out on the CancerStore for a very long time now. So... that's it. Stuff like that is not getting fixed, so anything else that would need even more work is going to stay the way it is.
Seems like this game is approaching to be a pass even on sale tbh.

This is going to be one of those games that the modding community will have to save. PGI sure as fuck can't.

My current battletech collection going on right now.

I should add in I'm also looking to grab hold of any of the old rules and stuff for collection purposes as well.

They were doing a damn good job before the update fucked everything. MW5 Mercs Reloaded and Yet Another Weapon/Mech had added a ton of content, with the former adding an actual MechLab with engine and component swapping and the latter a bunch of new variants and weapons. The AI mods had made combat actually entertaining, and someone was even working on new mission types. But alas, there's a "bug" in the game that prevents new assets from being loaded by modders, and who knows when it will be fixed since you can't sell 'Mech and weapon DLC if the modders have already done all of that.

Fucking typical.

A 'bug'. Right.

Y'know, HBS Battletech didn't have mod support at launch but they did get it worked in eventually.

The more I hear, the less I'm inclined to buy this dogshit.

Oh my god I'm going to kick Bullock, Inouye and Ekman up and down Vancouver in Roblox if they pull their usual shit on the modding community. Fuck you, you fucking assholes, you clearly don't WANT to do your jobs but you won't let a willing community step in and do it for you. Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you. It was like this all the way up to fucking March 2021 with MWO and now you're going to do it here. Neck yourselves, you alcoholic shyster faggots.

All box sets are currently out of stock in Germany, but the moment AGOAC and the Clan Box are available again, I'll order them. I recently ordered Total Warfare and I plan to slowly get all the optional rules eventually, too. I'd love to own a reprint of Battledroids (but that won't happen due to the Copyright Issues).

I'll also be a proud owner of two Saladins soon.

Quoth the roadrunner, "Meep meep!"
The idea of essentially doing boom-and-zoom attacks with that thing using an UAC20 is pretty scary.

Also a question to the more rule-savvy people in here:
According to the standard rules, a mech can traverse 2 levels in height by running/walking, does that require a slope? Ie: Can a Mech just "walk" ontop of a building according to the basic or advanced rules?
I know there's optional rules for mechs climbing, so I assume there's also optional rules for cliffs and buildings that make them impassable for mechs unless they climb, right?

A mech can go up or down 1 level by spending 2 MP. Alternatively, a mech can go up as many levels as it has jump jets during a jump move.
Yes. mechs can use buildings as stepping stones, but that's the point where you break out the CF rules and laugh as the ceiling caves in.

Thanks, but my question wasn't about them walking up or down a level in general, it's specifically about them scaling buildings. It's weird to imagine that a mech can just stroll on top of a 2 level building that's as high as the mech is itself and it somehow just teleports up a 12m vertical wall by spending some additional MP.

Okay, unclear wording on my part, then. A mech can only traverse up 1 level per hex, unless you break out the climbing rules.

Speaking of rules, have you guys seen this BattleTech: Destiny project?

Looks like they're trying to find a middle point between the standard rules and Alpha Strike, for a faster game that's more granular than AS. Looks interesting, but standardized range brackets and avoiding cluster hit tables aside I'm not sure what it's really bringing to the table in terms of speeding up the game.

That's a limitation of the tabletop rules and map mechanics, which really don't have any complex systems for slopes and the like.

Presumably, the mech clambers up the wall using hands and feet, which is reflected in the 2 MP cost to ascend 2 levels.

Incorrect. Per page 15 of the Battletech Manual (and pretty much all the other prior master rulebooks), a Mech may traverse a 1 or 2 hex elevation change by spending an additional 1-2 MP as part of the movement.

To tie it back to the discussion we had about vehicles earlier in the thread, this is one of the big downsides of ground vehicles in BT. 'Mechs can go up or down 2-level elevation changes, ground vehicles can only shift 1 elevation per hex traversed. So a 2-level (40 ft, more or less) wall (say, some earthworks) can't be traversed by a vehicle at all, while a 'mech can fairly easily clamber (or jump) over the walls to get on top of them and then on the other side.
