If you really want to zombie (zombie as meta has fallen by the wayside a bit, average alphas are through the roof) the Roughneck with 2 CT energy and 1 HD energy is what you want. Throw a big AC in the RT or an HGauss.

HGauss version
I haven't played MWO since 2016, Bit sad to hear that meta came to a close. Ripf my old Zombie Cent. Nothing quite like waltzing into a brawl, coming out with three kills, a bunch of assists, and only one leg and some back armor to ship home.

I liked that period a lot.

"Your mech is at 10 percent condition dude"

"I FAIL TO SEE HOW THAT'S MY PROBLEM."

I will say that the Cents now have crazy good quirks. The Centurion-D with twin LB5X can be monstrously effective, the cooldown quirks it got make those guns go off like a RAC. The A will run a few different things but it can make a Gauss Rifle fire rather fast - it's better with an LB10X and a mess of SRMs though.

I've been running the Marauder II Alpha variant with 4 LBX-5s and let me tell you..People don't like it. Paired with two SRM6s and a PPC it shreds armor faster then Amaris shooting Richard in the face.

How bad is the grind in MWO these days? Specifically, how do the earnings of an average match compare to the price of a new 'Mech of any given weight category?

Its still a bit grindy, but they hold monthly events where they give away free mechs and mech bays plus all sorts of random stuff. I can tell you its so much better then it was the first time I played back in 2014. As I speak you still have 4 days to get a MadDog and all you have to do is earn a total of 10000 match score.

Honestly, stuff like that might be the best part of BT. Those "things going catastrophically, improbably wrong in extremely rapid fashion" moments. The meme example is the Urbie's Small Laser scoring a TAC and nailing an MG ammo bin, which then turns your pristine Warhammer inside out. Another I remember hearing was an Atlas pilot failing a piloting roll for going up a steep hill, falling down, taking damage to the AC20 ammo bin and kablooey on like... first turn or something.

You'll be salty at first, then you'll realize it's fucking hilarious.
BAAAAASEEEMEEEENTS!

One of the most hilarious BT things I've read was a ATB campaign a guy did. First match was at night. In a city. With no moon. Against primarily light forces. Half the enemy were toast from failed piloting rolls before he fired a shot. Several enemy pilots straight-up killed themselves trying to stand up and out of the basements they had fallen into and falling back down.

As far as assault or heavy hero mechs go, what are good options for ballistic weapons? Between the battlemaster vomiting lasers, the shadowhawk for hybid missiles and ppcs, and the free mad dog as some flavor of missile boat. I get something with autocannons and some mind of light mech and I should have a good spread.

If you're cashing in your free hero, get the Direwolf hero (Ultraviolet, aka Ultraviolent). Some pod swaps and it will run 8 AC2s/LBX2s/UAC2s (UAC build gets spicy). It's one of the most expensive heroes in game, so getting it as a freebie is way better.

Holy fucking shit. Just how much cockpit shake do you generate with that thing?

I was torn between that, the cyclops because people I asked in the game said it was great, and the corsair because it looks derpy.

I also heard that the Cyclops is good.

But regardless from what I was told choosing either a Heavy or Assault Class hero mech for your option is probably the best way to go since all that shit is super expensive.
