So yeah, his name is in every one of the books that have to do with the Scorpions. He's even gone on the Battletech forums to mention this. He's developed a tiny cult of Scorpion Empire lovers who butt into conversations, "Well, you wanna know who doesn't commit such heinous war crimes? Scorpions!" "You wanna know who's really cool and treats their population with love and care? Scorpions!"

It's very weird.

Then there's the new guy Brian Young, the one in the polycule that slips stuff like that into his BattleTech stories.

Now I can't remember if it's Swift or Young that had the stories with the Clan spies with modular genitals, and frankly, I'm not ready to read more of those guys' works to find it.

That is unfortunately not that far off-base for BattleTech. Stackpole got really into plastic surgery for infiltrators for a while to the point he has a LOKI agent having a moment of regret about not being allowed to die with his original face.

I am of mixed mind when it comes to Stackpole.

I enjoyed the Warrior trilogy a lot. Then I read the Legacy of Kerensky series (Clan invasion), and I felt like I was reading a CW teen drama with mechs.

Or BattleTech: the Next Generation, with everyone's kids.

Not to mention his whole "Sure, Focht could have been a trans man." Schtick with Bryan Young a while back.

The big problem isn't that the writers try to slip that crap in the books and stories and message boards, it's that the editors and line developers don't say "no." If someone wants to headcanon and have troons and faggots and sex worker subcastes all over the place, fine. But the official position should be none of that stuff ever gets in print, if for no other reason that why print something sure to turn off a huge swath of your customer base?

But then they not only allow that stuff but hire them to be the official mouth pieces of the game, so I guess the editors and developers are perfectly good with it.

Only mention of that I'm familiar with is Phelan telling Ulric Kerensky how he figured out who Focht originally was, and first part of that was deciding he was probably born a dude since the chances of Focht being a natal woman were so minor as to be safely ignored unless he had somehow exhausted every other possibility as he began narrowing things down.

Now, considering how advanced SL medical science was *cough* Canopus *cough* and how much of it ComStar had managed to preserve that is unfortunately a reasonable position to have.

And they also told Alaric to fuck off. It is the pet project of someone, and I do not doubt that they'll get creamed by Operation Revival 2.0, but if there's someone who's winning decently it's the Scorps.
I would laugh if CGL brought the homeworlds back from the shadow realm just to glass every Scorpion world in the periphery, then go back to playing dead immediately after. That would be an "Alaric wins by doing nothing" story done right in my book.

just to glass every Scorpion

The sad thing, I do like the Scorps for having a legit excuse to run random Clan mechs doing random search things with the Seekers. I don't even find their writing particularly offensive considering that the entirety of Btech's writing works on writer/editor favoritism, the main thing is that they need to give me interesting stuff to put on the tabletop and interesting ideas for my own guys.

Are Scorps a favourite category? Yes but they give me interesting tabletop ideas
Is Ghosts of Obeedah Herbert Beas beating himself raw by giving WoB remnants AI, superjumps, Automata and Periphery colonies? Yes but it also gives me an excuse to run Manei Domini gayops after the 3080ies
Is The Society from the Wars of Reaving a completely and absurdly badly written schizoid plotline? Yes but it gives me an excuse to field Dark Caste with fun toys

All of Btech's writing is crap. All of their authors aren't worthy to write the back of a cereal box. All they have to do is to give me an interesting world where to play pretend, much like it is fun to play postapoc knight in the Succession Wars.

As I said before, that's why I am puzzled by the troon activism. No one should care about that in a poorly written setting for giant robots killing each other. It's all for the fun of your own table.

If you're puzzled by that, then you don't really understand troons.

The point of their activism and unceasing demands for "representation" isn't to make the game better in any way. It's because their kink requires them to force it upon others. The power trip is built into the persecution narrative. BattleTech could crash and burn and Topps could retire the brand, but they'd still be happy they at least got their "representation".

And then they'd move on to the next community they haven't infested yet.

Except Stackpole explicitly shut that line of speculation down. Yes, it was mentioned once (hat tip to @Snekposter ). Once. When Phelan was tracking down Focht's identity for Ulric. And it was discarded.

Throw stones at Stackpole for exploding fusion engines, sure, but that stupid ass shit was all Bryan Young and he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the writing tables.

Yeah, here's the actual scene from the book.
"No, indeed." The ilKhan pointed at the computer on Phelan's desk. "Now, what is this about a possible solution to the mystery of Anastasius Focht? Tell me everything so I can follow your reasoning."

The young MechWarrior glanced down at his notes, taking a moment to mentally compose what he was going to say. "The way I began was with the base Gus Michaels created before you sent him off to Alyina. From that, Focht would be, at most, one hundred years old. He seems obviously male, but the possibility of a sex-change was not discounted. The lost eye is a possible battle injury. Though it would have ended his career as a fighting soldier, he could still continue in a command capacity. We also know that he first surfaced in ComStar a dozen years ago, speaks German like a native of the Lyran Commonwealth, and that he may have spent some time at the Nagelring. Focht also told me he met my father once."

"Not much to go on," Ulric said quietly.

"True, but it was enough to get started. Knowing Focht is an alias, or at least operating from that assumption, I ran the records for every cadet and graduate of the Nagelring from the last eighty years. Screening them for height and other Bertillon measurements, that brought me down to just over a thousand candidates."

The ilKhan leaned forward with interest, clasping his hands around one knee. "You cross-referenced thos& individuals with their careers to see who had lived or died in combat, quiaff?"

"Aff, my Khan. We included those listed as missing in action, even if they were lost in skirmishes well before the Fourth Succession War. The Fourth War cost us all but a few candidates, and follow-up on those individuals led to a dead end. Nothing."

Phelan tapped the computer screen with a knuckle. "That made me wonder about the search parameters we'd put into the program-sifting data. I ran up another set of search parameters to check for a known quantity: me. I had the computer search for me in the same way it looked for whoever Focht might be."

"And?"

"It came up blank!" Phelan's smile broadened. "I enlarged the search parameters by deleting the Bertillon stuff and adding the Kell surname. It came up with my father, but ignored me and my uncle Patrick. That was because, according to the ComStar and Lyrcom data sets we're using, Patrick and I are dead."

"But you are alive. So, it would appear, is the Precentor Martial." Ulric tugged reflectively on his goatee. "You changed the search parameters, quiaff?"

"Aff. I stayed with our core of a thousand candidates and started filtering for wild cards. Focht once mentioned staying at the Lestrade estate on Summer, so I sorted for individuals who had served in units stationed on Summer or folks connected in some way with Aldo Lestrade. That cut our pool by half."

Phelan counted down on his fingers. "A comment Focht once made led me to believe he'd lost his eye in the Fourth Succession War. As I'd already checked all the people who had survived the war, I concentrated on the dead and missing from that war. I also tried to cross-correlate into the equation any contacts with my father or joint service with him. By mistake, I also included social contacts in that latter line of code—I'd copied it from the Lestrade parameters and just changed the name—and got a most interesting narrowing of candidates.

"Significantly, all were listed as either dead or missing in action."

The ilKhan leaned forward as Phelan's story unfolded. "You worked to verify the deaths of those on the list, quiaff?"

The MechWarrior nodded. "Death certificates, autopsy reports, gravestones, whatever. The genealogical data base we picked up from Domain helped enormously. While looking through it, I found a nice little memorial marker for myself on Arc-Royal."

Though Phelan tried to make the comment come off irreverently, the words caught in his throat. It wasn't being thought dead that bothered him so much as the thought of the grief it must be causing his family. The Wolf Clan had very much become his new family, but he still loved his blood relations and regretted any pain they suffered on his account.

"I cannot imagine that was a pleasant experience, Phelan."

"It was not, ilKhan, but fortunately, it sparked a memory." Phelan punched a request for data into the computer and the image of a great marble and granite mausoleum appeared on the screen. Carved into the black marble and outlined with gold leaf was the word "Steiner."

"After Archon Katrina Steiner died, I was present at her funeral. She was interred in the family crypt along with other Steiners of note. I recall hearing, at the time, that one of the memorial plaques in the tomb marked an empty casket. If not for that bit of family gossip, I think I would have dismissed my best candidate."

Phelan punched up another data request and a picture appeared on the screen. "This is the man I believe to be the Precentor Martial. He studied for three years at the Nagelring, but transferred to and graduated from Sanglamore on Skye. It was during his time in Skye that he first came to the attention of the Lestrade family and they cultivated his friendship. He commanded both the Seventh Lyran Guards and the Tenth Lyran Guards, which rumor says may be Victor Davion's current unit. The next Archon often emerges from the Tenth Guards, and our man was a likely candidate at that time.

"His claim to the title had to be put on hold, however, when Katrina Steiner successfully rebelled against Alessandro Steiner, putting her on the throne. It was at that point in Focht's life that Aldo Lestrade became a major influence. Aldo was adept at political intrigues, including the planning and execution of several assassination attempts against Archon Katrina. The last of these came in the middle of the Fourth Succession War."

The ilKhan nodded. "What of his military career? What sort of commander was he?"

Phelan punched another key. "He was a fine leader. His men called him 'the Hammer' because of his predilection for concentrating firepower on specific targets. He was particularly effective against the Kuritans, whose old strategy used to involve numerous single, small-unit actions. In his one or two engagements against the Free Worlds League, he showed an understanding of the tactics of highly mobile forces, but he still strove to get his foes into a position where he could pound them into submission."

"It is a rare commander who will alter his tactics to suit his foes," said Ulric. "His ability to do so—and what he observed of our tactics—make him very dangerous."

"I concur, ilKhan." Phelan chewed on his lower lip. "The one anomaly here is that this man was considered incapable of subtlety, but that does not seem to be true of Focht. He seems to have learned some new tricks in this new incarnation."

"Do you believe him capable of treachery?"

Phelan frowned. Well, he did ask me to spy on the Clans for him, but accepted my refusal after I became a member of the Warrior Caste. "I think he is a warrior first and foremost, ilKhan. Because of Lestrade's political meddling, he and his unit were assigned to a suicide mission during the Fourth Succession War. He acquitted himself well, in the end surrendering to Theodore Kurita to save the lives of his men. His assault broke the Combine's planned counterstrike into the Isle of Skye. It is believed that Theodore executed him."

The ilKhan stood, his face a study in thought. "Age and coloration are correct. Training is correct and his military background is suitable for the position he now occupies. What I have seen of his ability at tactical and strategic analysis certainly matches his background. Have you anything that casts doubt on your conclusion?"

Phelan shrugged. "Well, he could be mouldering in a grave on Dromini VI for all I know, but he is the best candidate we have. Except for the fact that he is supposed to be dead, he fits perfectly with Anastasius Focht."

Ulric nodded. "Very well. We will operate on the assumption you are correct. Prepare me a full briefing file on him and the other four top candidates. I need it tonight. You will brief the other analysts tomorrow."

Phelan raised an eyebrow. "I have more checks to run. Why so quickly?"

"Because, Phelan," the ilKhan said with a smile, "I want everyone briefed before the Precentor Martial joins up with us in three days to bargain away the future of ComStar."

Yes, I'm aware of all that. Stackpole nixed it on X, I believe.

But then he goes on to support many of Young's statements. Now, mind you, that's his prerogative. I was merely stating that I don't think Stackpole is the best BT writer. I found his first words great, but then the rest of vastly varying quality. His Dark Ages books were alright. The first person perspective was an interesting choice for a BT novel, and admittedly they were my first introductions to BT literature.

But recent announcements have Stackpoke and Young working on a comic or novel series together. I do wish they'd stop giving Young the air of legitimacy.

The whole thing is moot because there's a world of difference between "a spy so dedicated they'll undergo extreme surgery in order to go incognito" and "a man who thinks he's a woman".

Troons love to "claim" anyone who's genderbent, including temporarily or against their own will, as one of their own. Don't play their game.

I figure in the far future, there are so many spies that are "jobsexual". Whatever it takes to get the intelligence.

Admittedly, it's the new crop of writers (and as @William Murderface already pointed out, the editors for letting that stuff slip in) that are pushing that.

I still love the universe. I'm not a 3025 or DIE person, but I do admit I like a game where you have to drag it on by worrying about heat.

Currently reading the Gray Death Trilogy, having a blast. It's all fast food literature, but damn if it isn't satisfying.

It's good pulp. I like all the GDL books including Rock and a Hard Place. I have a personal affinity for boomer hard(ish) scifi authors.
I love cracking open an Honorverse novel and the ability to shut down the parts of my brain responsible for higher thinking and just nod and agree at how terribly ham-fisted it is at times. Naturally they've all got the standard legal disclaimers at the front about how there is ABSOLUTELY NO RESEMBLANCE IN THIS BOOK TO ANY PERSON, GROUP, OR ORGANIZATION FROM REAL LIFE AND IF THERE IS IT IS JUST A COINCIDENCE and then they throw Rob S. Pierre, Chairman of the Committee of Public Safety at you, overseeing a war against the Space British from his capital world of Nouveau Paris.

That's such a stupid idea. Are they really so starved for manpower they need to subject their agents to expensive, invasive surgery to change their sex, instead of simply training up a cadre of women?

And the troonery is baked into the idea, since it assumes a man can successfully behave like a woman, and vice versa, which is a tranny fantasy that has no bearing on reality.

The Manei Domini went a bit further (though no sex change as far as I am aware): they offer phermon defusers for their agents so they can make seductions way easier. Those things are then grafted into your body. The MD were always kinda weird. Like come on, those men and women undergo massive surgical operations where whole limbs are replaced and other stuff is inserted into their body but they can still pass as a normal man or woman? (Yeah I know field agents are different then pure "combat" MD but still)

And so far the only ever hint at massive surgery (like altering his outer appearnce from Caucasian to Asian to pass as a Combine crew member) was in the Warrior trilogy where that one Loki agent who used Frederick's attack on Dromini IV to slip into a combine Jumpship to blow it up.

Which shouldn't even be necessary since ever state is a multi-ethnic one.
