Berserk Series Discussion - RIP Kentaro Miura

Funnily enough, the movies were my introduction to Berserk. I knew vaguely what it was and I kept hearing good things about it. Plus they were on Netflix and at the time it was the most accessible Berserk media to me.

The first two are rough, especially the CGI that sometimes just looked like PS2-era FMVs. That and even I could sense they were condensing a shitload of material for the sake of fitting it into three movies. That said, I enjoyed the characters. I immediately got attached to Guts and the movies did a fine job showcasing his relationship with Griffith and the rest of the Band.

The third movie though I thought was amazing. For all the trilogy's faults, the third movie stuck the landing for the Eclipse, which was emotionally devastating in a way I just wasn't expecting. I went into Berserk expecting extreme violence, and I got that, I just wasn't expecting that level of tragedy. The climax of the third movie was the moment I fell in love with the series, which in turn inspired me to start reading the manga (which I've slowly been getting through but it's incredible, and I don't doubt all the added details will make the Eclipse hit that much harder).

The movies are okay as entry points if you want to dip your toes into Berserk, but I do understand why fans wouldn't like them as much considering they had to condense to fit into three movies.

I've had a huge attachment to the old dub actors for a long time and they all sound infinitely better and more polished in the movies than in the '97 series. Griffith's VA in particular is chilling and has grown so much from the previous adaptation. So if anything, I'll give them very high praise for that. I think the third film is overall pretty solid. Even the stuff they cut isn't as bad as it was in the other two films. It at least has an ending as well, whereas it's a lot more abrupt an unfinished in the '97 anime.

One of the funniest things about watching those movies was that I recognized Marc Diraison's voice because he was the voice of Zoro in the 4Kids dub of One Piece (which was also, sadly, my introduction to that series). It kinda sucks he doesn't get much recognition because he's a good actor and he's superb as Guts (hell, he was probably the most competent actor in the 4Kids One Piece dub). They should have at least brought the cast back for the 2016 anime.

i stopped reading when that side project came out where the protagonist is healed by loli piss 😒

miura done being sus yet?

Is there a satisfying stopping point in Berserk (e.g. the end of a major arc or something) where you can safely sit while waiting for it to fucking finish? I'd like to get into Berserk but at the same time I have no interest in starting a series infamous for its hiatuses with no end in sight.

You can actually stop where it's at now, minus the last few chapters, around chapter 354 at minimum.

Spoilers why, if you've seen the '97 anime: So after the Golden Age Arc Casca is raped into a potato and the series focuses on getting her sanity back which happens at ch 354.

It's out on mangadex now. 14 Pages and still cant get mad since the artwork is still 10/10. It's good to know that in a previous life Guts and Griffith got married.

HOLY FUCK, I'm disappointed in myself for taking so long to get into this series. It's everything I've wanted in fantasy stories and more.
I've been spending the last week binging through and I'm over half way caught up with everything. All I want at this point is for Guts to have some peace and quiet with his dark skinned tomboy GF, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK.

I waffle back and forth on whether I like Isidro or not. This week I like him.

The true tragedy is that he was only 54. RIP, Berserk was a big part of my life since like, my early teens.
He died relatively young, but it's been suspected that he suffered from health issues for some time. It was not the greatest shock to hear about this to be honest
