Berserk Series Discussion - RIP Kentaro Miura

This is the best we could hope for. I actually said, "Thank God," when I heard the news. Thank God Miura related what the ending was, and thank God Mori and co. believe they can do his masterpiece justice.

No ending is not better than an approximation of what Miura had planned. And the characters deserve an ending. I still wish they had decided to let guest artists do an issue each!

Some of the drawings were meh, but the full body panel of zodd was an excellent illustration! Also glad they are pulling away from an immediate griffth confrontation which is what the first of these chaps seemed to start as, illusory griffdawg to reorient goals is the perfect direction after un-tarding casca (is that even a spoiler now or is that established knowledge at this point in the general fandom it's not like vader is lukes dad tier, but people are aware y/n?)

I don't like the design of everyone's upper torsos. It looks really weird, ALL NECK.

But the content itself is fine. I'm willing to trade slightly less polished art as long as the content is decent.

I like this artstyle. Guts doesn't look as softened as he was in miura's last chapters.

I thought casca would not get PTSD when she looked at Griffith. she saw him before in her potato state and she was crying (because she remembers griffith's prime days from past and not pre-eclipse griffith and Femto) but that doesn't seem like the case anymore. she straight up screamed at that mf.

I think she realized that he raped her

At least that's how it kinda looks to me.

I honestly I really Love the art style, it gives me old school Berserk vibes and really eased all my worries going forward, Mourad art is a 10 and I’d say this like 8.5-9, some things look wonky but that’ll improve as time continues. I also really like they’re finally picking up the pace for Fantasia and the lack of dialogue, really gives it suspense I feel.

I don't know, not a fan of the fact that the dragon slayer is unable to even touch Griffith when it's already been established to be able to cut ghosts, goblins and even a god

But on a technical level the art style does seem a bit different. Miura if I recall was very strict about getting things perfect, so it does seem like they're less so (but if that means we don't have to wait 6-12 months for a chapter I'm fine with it).

What I noted though... looking at how they drew Guts's shadowed face you can already tell there's a difference. The Z shaped eye was more of a berserker helm feature (which he doesn't have on) and he head weirdly overlaps with the panels above it. It feel more like they're trying to do a Misty Valley style (which I will admit was my favourite arc in both tone and art style) but something feels a bit missing.

Another example of course is the last time Guts saw Griffith

But you know, I'm just glad the story is getting continued. I'm fine with the art going from 11 to 9 if it means we get more of berserk.

Part of Berserk's appeal was the perfection of the art, so it's hard to not be a little disappointed. This isn't so much an art style issue as it is a general downgrade. It's just Kouji Mori's regular art with more detail. It's not just the raw drawing quality either but the paneling and composition as well. The sense of motion is awkward too:

Makes me think of how hard the ps2 game tried to match the weight of Guts' attacks. You really felt it every time you slashed something. The above slash felt very weak. Also this particular page just looks like shit:

What the hell is that? Look at his arm! There's some other perspective issues but that's definitely the worst one.

I wouldn't mind a "once every couple months" schedule if we could get something closer to Miura's level. I figured it would at least look like Duranki but it turns out Miura still did the sketches and storyboards for that. There's a few pages that really did it for me though

Not quite Miura level but more like what I expected. Very very respectable. I hope with time this becomes the standard, though getting that kind of quality out every two weeks like they said is gonna be hard.

The story is fine so far. No complaints there yet. Though it has me thinking, this is Guts' third real fight with Zodd right? Usually that's the last of something in a story. Maybe we'll finally get Zodd's backstory and defeat. I figure Guts is gonna get some sort of powerup and actually manage to cut Griffith here since Miura said a while back that this would be their first real duel. I don't think it will end with Guts slashing pointlessly at the air until Griffith fucks off. He won't defeat him but he'll get a proper hit in. If we're gonna do a parallel to Flora's mansion here I could see a swarm of apostles flooding through that hole in the sky roots Zodd came out of. Except this time they've got some actual defense beyond Guts. The clay golems were one thing but a building sized wicker man is another thing entirely. We've got multiple Flora-level wizards, an elf queen, and I'm sure the dwarves can fight too.

Yeah that bothered me too.

I'm hoping that they're able to settle into an easier rhythm with the art in terms of proportions over time. Even Miura's earlier art from Arc 1 showed noticable improvement later on once he started settling into the story. I feel like the team and Mori just need to come out of their shells a little bit. But I'm not going to be a nitpicking douche about it. This is a Herculean feat with what they're trying to do.

I enjoyed the chapters, although it was more or less what I expected and wished it was deeper. basically just guts going GRRRRRR and Casca going 'argh D:'
Art was nice as well, it still has you wondering if some panels are 3D models or drawn by hand (which is good since it's all drawn by hand)
The women are drawn more fantasy-anime-y but Miura started the trend himself. Overall I like them and they fit in perfectly.

Pretty damn faithful continuation of Miura's work. The artwork, while not 100% Miura quality, was still really impressive. Especially when you take into account that the team was only drawing 7% of Berserk and Miura the rest. To be honest because how short these two 'chapters' were it's kind of hard to judge anything specific. The worst thing from it was that Griffith and Guts spat. Not horrible but Guts saying nothing was a little awkward. There are also some minor mistakes in the art, like Guts' daggers being way too big but honestly those are more nitpicks than anything and I didn't even notice it until someone pointed them out.

Overall I say the series is in really good hands. I honestly don't mind the drop in quality art-wise because we are getting bi-weekly releases now. No longer do Berserk fans have to endure 2 chapters a year.

For real? That's pretty kino
Apparently anyways. May just be for the 6 chapters that will finally end Fantasia.

Consider this seems to be the beginning of the end I imagine Zodd is gonna get whacked pretty hard. It is somewhat hinted in earlier chapters that Zodd may betray Griffith at some point. I could see Zodd abandoning Griffith after the fight to join up with Guts' crew because he's bored of his life serving under Griffith. I will roll my eyes if it's yet another Zodd x Guts fight where he just pisses off eventually.
