The 32X port of Doom is fairly decent for the time, certainly better than most of the console ports of the era, but the most contentious part of that version is the music.
Thankfully, the Doom fanbase has been hard at work at fixing this version, vastly improving the music as well as giving it some much-needed polish.
...and by God, does it play good. Not only do they make the game look and sound better, but they've actually fixed some of the gameplay issues with the original 32X port, like how the tick speed of the game seemed to be faster, making the game unintentionally harder. Not only that, but you now have a decent amount of options to customize your experience with playing the game. Now you can bind buttons to strafe instead of being forced to hold the Use button to switch between strafe and tank controls, making circle strafing attacks actually feasible with the controller. Switching weapons can now be done by holding "Mode" and pressing a corresponding button, making switching weapons less tedious than scrolling through each one.
But that's not all! This Romhack also features support for the Sega Mouse accessory, so if playing with the controller isn't your style, then you can play with a keyboard and mouse. I tried it for a little bit, and it plays just as smooth as a modern source port. If it weren't for the cut-down maps, I would honestly forget I was playing it on a 32X emulator.
But the real star of the show in my opinion is the music. Gone are the "Fart MIDIs" of the original, and in are
some amazing renditions of Doom's soundtrack that honestly blows the original PC game out of the water in my opinion.
