Biomutant

Here's my first impressions so far. I'm at the part just after you look around a human settlement called Bricktown and I sided with the Myriad tribe.

I have to agree with gaystoner about the intro: meh. It's a decent tutorial and it's filled with exposition about you and how you're destined to save (or destroy) the Tree of Life. Outside of that, though, the rest of the game is pretty good so far. However, while it does work, the tutorial kind of drags on a little bit since it continues at your character's childhood village.

The story and lore (so far) seems to be about as simple as you can get: A company named Toxonol polluted the old world and humanity died out. To save the Tree of Life or let it die, you have to unite, subdue, or destroy the tribes. Nothing wrong with that.

As for the difficulty settings, I think that Hard difficulty is what you should play on. While the enemies are admittedly bullet-spongy, it forces you to actually dodge their attacks instead of simply wailing on them, since the attacks can be very damaging, at least in the early game.

Two complaints I have so far is that, since the narrator speaks for every character you interact with, their personalities don't really show as much as they can/should. Although this sometimes isn't really a problem, like when Goop teaches a younger you to swim by simply chucking your ass into the water. The other complaint might be nitpicking, but the cutscenes could use some more work. When one of the monsters attacked the village at the beginning, you can actually see it vanish when it transitions back to you. Other times, it's a bit too sudden. For example, when I caught that creature for the Elvis impersonator in a flashback, it immediately cuts to him being next to you and talks to you, making it seem like he teleported.

As it stands so far, though, I'm entertained so far to keep playing,

I'm glad the game finally came out, and that the game itself is good. I can remember watching trailers for it back in 2017 and wanting to play it, only for it to keep getting delayed again and again. At one point I thought it had been cancelled, so when I heard that the game was still being developed, and that THQ Nordic had simply given the developers as much time as they needed to complete it, I was relieved.

I'm hoping to upgrade to a good quality gaming PC/laptop later this year, so I'll have to wait till then to be able to play it.

I heard this game sucks and I thought this game already came out years ago.

I’ll be a 70 on Metacritic.

Called it.

My beef with the game is that combat bores me. Enemies don't really react to being hit, so you wind up doing all these martial arts and magic on some dude who just stands there like he's bored until he eventually falls over. Plus I've found that just shooting people drops them way faster than melee or magic.

I hope Biomutant does well, or as well as it deserves, just enough that that they can expand on what they have with future games. It was made by a tiny team and not a AAA studio so Nordic's advances at it applies to sales might actually keep them afloat, it might not be a death sentence.

I definitely feel that although I use a fair amount of magic becuase I've dumped points into it but yes gun mods seem to be free DPS. I'll say my guy is specifically weak in melee/armor/vitality so thats probably why I'm not super into using melee but melee combos still end up being used. For me it feels like the enemies have 'auto guard' or something cause its like they parry/deflect all of my moves lol

Seems the game has a release date! May 25, 2021!

This video seems pretty legit. At one point you're riding a airship esque thing and literally drop Anchor to start ground running(3:10), It has a Comix Zone/Viewtiful Joe styled combat. It seems like its trying to be very eclectic. At one point you can see the main character riding a mechanical hand and the hand does a shooting gun gesture firing a shot at an enemy(4:40). There is also a 'Bubble' mechanic that shows a bubble surrounding the character and it collects enemy on the outside and eventually it bursts causing the enemies to scatter. There is a gliding mechanic seen. There is a submarine type battle section(6:30).

It's giving me solid 'Adventure Time' vibes wherein AT exists in the 'real world' but after a nuclear holocaust of sorts resulting in radiation creating everything. Similarly you can see the main character zip glide down to something that looks like a Boeing 747(6:00).

Overall the game looks like a combination of Monster Hunter/Kingdoms of Amalur. might seem a little cheesey but the combat looks varied between weapons/shooting/martial arts/some sort of magic stuff.

Oddly they're advertising a 'Special Pre-Order Class' which seems worrisome. The class seems to be a dual wielding ninja and nothing about the game info talks about 'Classes' like how many there will be.

BIOMUTANT® is an open-world, post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG, with a unique martial arts styled combat system allowing you to mix melee, shooting and mutant ability action.

A plague is ruining the land and the Tree-of-Life is bleeding death from its roots. The Tribes stand divided. Explore a world in turmoil and define its fate – will you be its saviour or lead it to an even darker destiny?

Key Features:
  • A NEW TAKE ON 3rd PERSON COMBAT
The martial arts style combat system allows you maximum freedom of movement and agility while mixing shooting, melee and powers from your mutations. • EVOLVE YOUR GAME-PLAY
You’ll be able to re-code your genetic structure to change the way you look and play. This will of course affect your attributes and in addition to this, exposure to bio-contamination in the world will lead to mutations like the Turtleform and Mucus Bubble, while exposure to radioactivity found in bunkers from the old world will affect your mind and unlock psi-mutations like telekinesis, levitation and more.

  • NEXT LEVEL OF CRAFTING
You are totally free when crafting weapons. Mix and match parts to create your own unique 1H or 2H slash and crush weapons. Revolvers, rifles and shotguns and add modifications like cork-screws and battery-powered chainsaw modules to bio-contaminated sludge vials adding to your combat arsenal. There are even characters you’ll meet that’ll craft cool stuff for you, like bionic wings, a jump-pack and even let you modify your Automaton - the scrap-toy sidekick!

  • GEAR UP FOR ADVENTURE
You are totally free when equipping your character. Not only when it comes to choosing weapons you created, but what type of gear you wear. Equip a gas-mask and an oxygen tank for exploring the Dead Zones, thermos-resistant clothes for venturing into cryonic areas or protective gear for taking on bio-contaminated creatures, the choice is up to you.

  • SURVIVE IN A VIBRANT OPEN WORLD
You are free to explore the world and what lies beneath its surface, by foot, mech, jet-ski, air-balloon or area unique mounts. Explore the dying wildland, the tunnels and bunker networks of the underworld, and find your way up the mountains or out in the archipelago. There are lots of discoveries to be made, mysteries to unravel, creatures to confront and weird characters to meet in this vibrant and colorful world.

  • AN UNUSUAL STORY WITH AN UNUSUAL END
Your actions play a major part in the unfolding of a story where End is coming to the New World. A plague is ruining the land and the Tree-of-Life is bleeding death from its roots. The Tribes stand divided, in need of someone strong enough to unite them or bring them all down...
You are guided through the world by a Storyteller that narrates every step of your journey, but it’s your actions and choices that’ll decide how your story of survival ends.
Looks pretty fun. The melee could use some work though because its slow as shit and doesn't look fun to do.

so far nordic seem to have been pretty smart with it's releases, small teams doing small games that don't need to sell millions in the first week, but still good enough they can make some money long term.

I heard this game sucks and I thought this game already came out years ago.
depends on who you ask

I really, really hope the developers can fix up some of the stuff in the game in post-release and if they can't realize what they messed up on and build a much better sequel with the foundation they already created.

Just progressed more into the game and I'm currently at level 15. Once you've gotten out of the tutorial-heavy sections, the game really opens up and it's more fun to play, though it still has some gripes.

The narrator talks your damn ear off on the default settings and it's annoying as shit. The advice he gives you is rather obvious, such as him telling you that you're half dead at half health, or useless, like when he tells you it's night or that you're destined to save/destroy the tree. Other times, it's cryptic and I genuinely can't tell if it's supposed to be helpful or not. An example of that last one is when I got on my mount and he said something along the lines of "I wonder if your mount will eventually stop listening to you..." What does that even mean? My mount's not behaving any differently, even after I keep launching myself off of high ledges, since there's no falling damage. Either lower the frequency or turn it off in the settings. I've heard that the Japanese audio for the narrator is apparently better, though I haven't checked that out..

Even on Hard mode, I think the game rewards you for going out of your way to craft the best weapon you can get your hands on. I got some pretty good items in the Dead-Zone, crafted a new melee weapon with it, and I was soon able to fight people 3-4 levels above me. So far, the only time I really struggled was in the Dead-Zone, where there was around ten enemies 3 levels above me at a store, but I eventually beat that using my mutation skills. Still, the game encourages you to use your skillset instead of mashing, since even the weaker enemies are capable of fucking your shit up if you're not paying attention.

Speaking of the Dead-Zone, the Mekton's movements and fighting capabilities are pretty good, but holy shit does it take a while to regenerate health on its own. Does the game say anything about what the upgrades for the Mekton do? Yeah, it (supposedly) makes it better, but how does it get better? The game sure as hell doesn't tell me when I pick one up, nor when I try to put it on. Is it just decoration?

The sidequests are your typical sidequests, nothing wrong with that. However, one of them is an absolute joke, and that's the Moth Infestation quest. Hop on a bellow not 15 feet away and jump on it a few times to clear the moths, then go back to the quest giver to complete it. It literally took me only a minute to complete it and I'm wondering if the villagers are just lazy shits. The devs might as well call the quest "Free EXP."

The aura system is about what you'd expect, but I have one minor nitpick about it. When I'm talking to that one guy in the Dead-Zone, why does being a grammar nazi about something he said give me dark aura? Was it the way my character supposedly brought it up?

My experience has been relatively bug-free. The only notable one was when I was fighting a big enemy near a suburban human town and I got it down to half health. I walk back a few steps, past a resource tower I knocked down just before the fight, then its health bar suddenly disappeared. I noticed it for half a second before I went towards the enemy again. Only when the health bar appeared again, the enemy's health was fully restored. The game assumed I left the fight since I got out of its aggro range and restored its damn health, even when I was taking pot shots at him from a distance. Not a big deal, since I easily got around it by simply not leaving the general area, but the enemy's aggro range couldn't be a bit bigger?

That being said, I'm still having fun with the gameplay.

I honestly think this looks pretty okay, maybe a little repetitive in the long run. I think the worst thing the game has going for it is the price tag and honestly, I guess I can't necessarily blame them with the long production time.

This is what happens when you start development on a game during a huge fad and chase down those trends all the way until launch. Reminds me a lot of Overgrowth, in that Overgrowth was trying to be a huge technical marvel made by a small team and wound up being completely outdated by the time it hit "1.0".

Biomutant isn't going to get fixed, either. The core of the game is extremely flawed, and every little thing they could improve on, like combat, isn't going to fix the flaws of being an openworld game made by an inexperienced group of people with next to know other games under their belt. You don't start with the most difficult contemporary game type to get right, you start smaller and if you get enough bank roll to move up to that, then consider it.

They also should've never compared the game to DMC, or any other game known for its combat. At best it feels like some 2000s budget title you picked up randomly. There's literally no feedback, no hitstun, and the "combo" system is the most asinine part of it all. Simply performing 2 hits, or a mixture of gunshots and melee to get a canned attack animation is horrible.

The defenses surrounding the team have been pretty pathetic too, but that's to be expected. People followed this game for years with next to no information, and that sunk cost weighs heavy.

Overgrowth was developed by furry's that suddenly got tons of money for deviantart commissions by creating humble bundle so it took nine years to get that game out because they were jerking off. It's not comparable.

Both turned out lackluster, sat in development for far too long with multiple changes to core design throughout, and have promised to fix what their core game design caused. It's the same shit, and just as with every other "they'll fix it" game on the market, this one will be added to the list of "long awaited, shortly remembered" games that the sunk cost gang latches onto.

Sure but Biomutant isn't a "by furrys for furrys" game so comparing them to each other just because they have human-like animals in them is really weird. I haven't played it but my gut instinct goes more towards comparing it to the Bionic Commando reboot or maybe Dark Void.

wat. I never mentioned that it has anything to do with animals, only that it was plagued by years and years of development issues that leave it feeling dated by the time it released. I very clearly said that in my first post, never mentioning anything to do with both being about animals. I have a feeling you skimmed the first sentence of my post and assumed I was comparing anthro animals, ironically, because that's where your mind went.
