Biomutant

Been there for a couple of years now, I think.

But reviews aren't looking too good, but then again everyone saying bad about Biomutant also gave Cyberpunk 2077 rave reviews... so... 🤷
TBH The type of gamers that review games and get highly published never jive with my opinion of games. Key Example...defending cyberpunk 2077 when even without knowing the hype falls short of a game like Dishonored which had more creativity in level design.

Here are the reviews off steam which are seemingly excellent.
“Biomutant could be the sleeper hit of 2021. Not only is it downright adorable, but it's also an absolute blast to play. Developer Experiment 101 has created a world that you want to explore, and it frequently rewards you for slowing down and taking it all in. Throw in some great combat, robust character creation, and a wonderful crafting system and you've got a game that should please even the most jaded of open-world enthusiasts.”
4.5/5 – We Got This Covered

“For the first time in a long time, a game has lived up (and in my opinion surpassed) the hyped that’s been created around it. Frankly, I’ll be surprised if BIOMUTANT is not game of the year.”
9.5/10 – GameSpace

“Considering Biomutant’s delayed and seemingly troubled road to release, I’m blindsided by just how good it is. Experiment 101 has clearly been afforded the time to see its vision through, something which is unfortunately far too rare in the cutthroat gaming industry. I did not expect this to be one of my favorites of the year so far, let alone one of the most enjoyable open-world games I’ve ever played. A true modern gaming miracle.”
9.5/10 – Game Revolution

Welp just bought the game and am looking forward to tomorrow! I'll let y'all know how it goes

A lot of people didn't like the Gothic series or Risen series, either, and I fucking loved that shit. If Biomutant is anything like that then bam. I'm there.

Yes. Those games were fun despite their flaws. I doubt this game is going to go that route RPG/Story wise...but if it stays true to a silentprotag-kungfu angle with a little bit of cheese and lots of action I'm going to enjoy it. The studio is Swedish with the lead art director/game developer from Mad Max/Just Cause series. Both of those (imo) did the 'do whatever' in the open world setting fairly well.

The Character Creation also isn't 'slider' based in the traditional sense but your character reflects its stats in a predetermined way. I have a feeling the story will be simple but the action will be what keeps it fun. And adding in 'current era' the idea of DLC...It seems like the game is focused more on the interactions/ general playability vs the over arching story. To me this actually a good thing because stories typically fall flat/become predictable. Instead if this studio developed a 'fun game' that I can spend hours playing without 'progressing' and then develops a larger 'story driven' DLC/expansion that adds some minor gameplay additions I feel like that would be cool.

Establish a fun world with ideas/lore that makes "sense". Then see how the playerbase responds and expands upon it. Could be an existential threat that changes the world or something comes in to threaten the typical balance and the game changes that way.

Wait the art director is the same person behind just cause huh didn't know that also would kill for a remake of just cause 1

It's an open world game with very little justifying the gameplay systems.

Like you don't need this advanced combat system when the enemies can just be destroyed in 1 or 2 normal hits. It's something that would be worth picking up if it's on sale, but not at full price.

Being that the team is small and the gameplay scope is big, they probably could have benefitted from cutting specific systems out because there's almost nothing that utilizes them and instead refocused their efforts into other areas of the game.

I liked the part where you had to find a constipated lizard.

I don't like furry very much, but if this game is like Gothic, and you can hunt down constipated lizards, I'd be willing to give it a shot.

It really looking like a game that made for children/teenagers. Like you do all this cool flashy stuff while playing as a gross looking weasel Muppet in a bright and colorful world but its pretty easy and the narrator explains everything for you like your a idiot.

Like if any one had a 6 year old that wanted to hang out and watch you play something or a like a 10 year old to casually play something about as violent as Kung Fu Panda this game would be perfect.

I think they really just wanted to make a cutesy apocalyptic game. Similar to that one... Bad Teddy? Oh! Naughty Bear. The serial killer teddy bear.

That said, I've seen people playing the game and Fextralife gave it 7/10 bemoaning the shortcomings, but saying there's definitely something there and that they could bring it out if they work at it. It honestly looks like something I'd play and I don't mind supporting the developer if they actually can make something unique, because if they find their groove and THQ Nordic keeps them around... they could make something amazing.

3 hours in I'm having fun and loling at the jaded gamers on Steam reviews.

Positive: Fun combat. Comparing it to Ratchet and Clank with slight Arkham mechanics seems the most accurate. people are saying the combat feels 'weightless' but I'm using the various setups/combos for the 'wungfu' mechanic and it feels fun/engaging. I'm also playing on Hard. People say the parrying/dodge mechanic is 'bad' but I'm parrying and dodging with success similar to Arkham. Idk.

The world seems pretty big/interesting so far. I think people are expecting some level of constant 'world ending no happiness' story in order to be entertained. I don't. Its like if the plot of Kung Fu Panda met Jericho. The story is basic and the intro is 'meh' but I feel it sets up a decent amount of the characters. You can turn the Narrator off if he annoys you during the open world. Otherwise its Sim-Speak for animals and Narrator which I think gives a certain vibe to the game.

Personally the game brings something to the table that many other developers don't with higher budgets and triple the team size. Is it worth 60bucks? Personally yea but I don't buy games often and I like supporting a smaller studio. It's definitely good value at 40$ . Is it Seikiro/Dark Souls? nope. Is it Ratchet and Clank + Open World? Totally.

Oh, so they expected Dark Souls "everyone is fucked" story. That's dumb. I don't think the game ever alluded to being anywhere near that.

But yeah, a lot of the reviews seem like they wanted something like Dark Souls. I saw one talking about how the combo keys are confusing and it's pretty straight forward like Arkham or Mad Max from what I've seen. There's no combo system in Dark Souls, so that's probably what they wanted or expected. I blame journos because everything has to be Dark Souls to them.

I was gonna say it comes off more like Jak 2 or 3. Ratchet and Clank works, too, though.

I say Ratchet and Clank because it has the same vibe with weapons/powers doing crazy things but it doesnt amount to you having to do much the get the effect. The combo system essentially is like...weapons have 'super attacks' along with basic attack patterns/jump attack etc. You have to do 3 'super attacks' (thats when you see the comic book words..also on reloads it goes klack klack which is funny imo)and then you can enter into 'wung fu' state and do some super attacks. I don't have any extra wung fu attacks unlocked but the game seems like it will unlock them through quest/item acquisition.

Super powers are just powers you use and they have the same effect but can be combo'd to make them feel different with some being gatekept behind 'good/evil' paths. Honestly the good/evil thing doesn't seem super developed but its there similar to InFamous so I can't complain.

For the story...it really does feel like an edgy Pixar film and I've been enjoying it/actually laughed out loud at some parts. There have already been random story/gameplay events that have me grinning while I'm playing. It's a fun game and I feel like 'hardcore gamers' don't know what that is anymore. They want the 'next big streaming game' or 'lolimgood look at me' whereas this game will make anyone who plays it look good but I've also died like twice because I thought 'eh I could use a heal but no thanks' and then I get pummeled by something.

My only complaint is that is waaaaaay too easy.

I think this game was made for tweeners or games journalists. They should have marketed at the 10 to 14 bracket imho.
