Blue Archive - The south Korean Gacha game that almost died, is now being released on Steam this summer.

Tsubaki is all but guaranteed given
Yeah I second this, Tsubaki is incredibly good at her job as a Tank and you can easily max her out, don't let the 2* fool you. She's got a degree of flexibility that lets you use her in multiple encounters. Self-healing, increased defense, and the ability to take the enemies attention away from your other units.

Hoshino and Marina should be good tanks, no? I think I actually need to do skill and gear upgrades (meaning grinding for materials) to get extra protection. Also how is Kokona?
Battle Hoshino, yes, Marina's problem is that she's an Evasion based tank which makes her more useful for PvP while everywhere else she's very squishy early on, so bring 2 healers. Once you get her a T4 bag though you can phase out one healer if you see that you can get away with it.

Also how is Kokona?
Very good. Low cost single target healer, in raids she has an added benefit of lowering cost each time she gives 5 stamps of approval, you get those by using her healing EX and when enough crits are scored. She's not the best at either job but her versatility is what makes her so good.

don't let the 2* fool you
Agreed. For new players here, there are a lot of 1* and 2* who are absolutely fucking cracked and are absolutely worth investing in them and getting them to 3* (and more) ASAP. Serika is probably the least flashy unit, even when looking at just her fellow launch students. Her EX skill is just her sperging out and giving herself an attack buff and her basic skill is just doing a lot of damage to one enemy. However, the amount of damage that angy cat does is insane and she can often outdamage everyone else in your red team. Serina needs no introduction, one of the best healers in the game still. Junko does lots of damage. Nonomi just fucking clears entire waves. Kotama is perfect when you have no idea who the fuck to put in as her AoE damage buff is really good. Haruka can become the tankiest tank of the game but she does need a lot of investment. That's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Really, it's easier to list out 1* and 2* that sadly either fucking suck outright or there's no content where they're useful in yet, like Airi or Nodoka.

The way to deal with encounters with AoE gimmick - combine her with Serina, another low-star character* whose EX skill allows you to move-command the otherwise auto-battling Students (inb4 I'm missing something very obvious.) Ideally you just move Tsubaki away and taunt the enemies to waste their AoE on her, but this can be tricky because the ability only targets the destination and selects the closest student. Still allows you to spread out your formation so they don't all stand in the same fire.

Related: in case someone else has this problem, you can aim targeted abilities by simply dragging without completing the click (cancel with ESC.) This almost certainly was explained in one of the tutorials but they have bad habit of handholding you through a dozen obvious mandatory steps, something actually important can get lost in the sauce.

(*guaranteed to the point of being filler in pulls, and we even had a mini-drama where someone outed themselves as tourist by posting a screenshot where he pulled Serina for the first time)

It's mandatory to know this if you've got Iori, otherwise you're wasting her entire AoE.

Oh that's Bintarded, you did bring him up once.

Reading a bit more recommendations I'm torn between Karin or Ako. Ako seems the more practical choice of being a crit buffer and helps with healing, so I could slot her everywhere, Karin though looks really awesome and working with characters I already own like Ui and Asuna School, but not sure if it's really usable for most of the content due to enemy resistances.

Edit: I do see that you can grind Karin in Missions, though it's on page 17, so it might be a long time until it's possible.

Ako no doubt. You won't really need Karin if you don't plan on going for plat in specific raids, but by the time you'll be ready for that, you will probably have either pulled her already, either farmed enough materials for her. Ako has great versatility and is a must-have for difficult content.

Yeah usually the power creep in BA doesn't come from new DPS characters but from supports being able to hyperbuff your one or two DPS characters. You can often check which teams people used to clear specific difficulties in raids or in PvP and you very often see launch characters still going strong. Hell, regular ass Hoshino is a mainstay in PvP due to her EX skill having a wide cone of effect AND it stuns whoever it hits.

One nice thing about Tsubaki is that the current web event is giving out Eleph Choice Box 2 items for logging in daily and using stamina. If you go into your inventory and use the item, you can exchange it for certain students' Eleph, including Tsubaki. As a 2-star character, I think it only takes 40 or 60 Eleph to buy Tsubaki from the student roster page. Looking at the event page, I think you would need to spend around 200 stamina daily for a week to get enough item boxes, which should be doable even for a new player in the time left for that event.

Also don't sleep on Haruka. She's a 1-star character, so you're guaranteed to get her early and often. It doesn't take long to get her up to 3-star level and unlock all her passive skills. She has high HP and defense and is a perfectly usable tank for clearing mission and event content.

It seems to be the trend, since buffers and debuffers stay relevant no matter what and are less flashy, while bigger beatsticks come everyday so whales buy in.

Do I need to go into the BA website or is it automatic?

1) Click on the circled icon, click to claim the rewards.
2) They will appear in your mailbox. Claim them from the mailbox.
3) A window will pop up asking if you want to open them now. Click yes.
4) It will take you to the items tab, where you can then select a character and how many elephs you want to claim.
5) Since you've been playing for a few days now, close the Special mission event window and check it again after 5 minutes, to see if you can retroactively claim the rewards from previous days.

I think i have created a monster...

Weird, this doesn't appear to me. I have only the tasks and the Box event.

For some reason the web events don't appear in the Steam version, only on phone.

I personally prefer Eimi as a red armor tank but both her and Haruka are probably the best for pure red armor tanking. Though they both also have the same drawback in that they're in a school where there's a lot of competition for upgrade mats (Millennium and Gehenna respectively).

Against my better judgement I decided to downloaded this and I'm lost just looking at the main menu, just like that anime horse game I tried recently too. Is all gacha slop now this convoluted and impenetrable? This is unplayable, they dump too much on you at once. I'm getting too old for this shit.

I am now scared YuYu Hakusho: Slugfest will be this way...

As someone who also just started. It seems like the best method is playing the story at your leisure, and mainly do Quests until you can't proceed any longer, and then you grind for equipment and then ability levels with all the rest of the options until you can continue with quests. Rinse and repeat.
