Don't bother, the AT Protocol is one of the most niggerliscious and over-engineered pieces of shit I've ever seen. Its just a gayer activity pub with random band-aids thrown on top of it to make it "werk". Here's a good video that summarizes it:
I'll just collect a list of sins of this god forsaken protocol:
- Identity is decentralized, not a problem in itself, but that means its subject to the problem of human readability (how do you claim a name and ensure no one can use it in a decentralized way?). Bluesky's ass-backwards solution is to make is so a fucking domain name points to your identity (hence why all bluesky addresses are something like null.bsky.social).
- Because storage isn't free, content uploaded to the network needs to go somewhere to be permanent. ActivityPub and other fediverse instances bundle your identity with your data to put it in one area. It's a bad system since an instance kills your identity and your data. Bluesky doesn't fix this at fucking all and instead just hosts people's data in "Personal Data Servers", which are just big stores of data. You can host your own, but good luck having it peer to the network. In theory you can move your data around too to get it off a dying instance, but I have never seen this done in the wild.
- This is the real shitter moment: ActivityPub is very chatty as the instances talk to each other directly to get and repost content, it's very computationally expensive. AT "fixes" this by having a relay that just crawls everyone's Personal Data Servers. This just means that there's a massive damn relay that's expensive as hell to rum that filters through all the data and can realistically shut you off from the network. It's not technically decentralized, but it effectively is.
- Finally, the relays throw all the junk they find into a stream that various apps (called app views) can read, which is what the bluesky website is.
The only major positive is that the AT Protocol lets you have localized identities that can be verified by anyone, so if you're banned by an instance you can migrate your identity. Too bad your data will be gone with it in all likelihood because you're an idiot who trusted someone else to host your data forever (which just puts it back into the "twitter" camp of how it works).
The Personal Data Servers can be set up by normal people, but to be indexed you have to go to these massive mega relays. If there was a Kiwifarms bluesky, it'd just be blacklisted by the relays. Bluesky is just ActivityPub but gayer and more complex for no reason. It solves none of the problems and just serves to be tranny central. You might as well just use a centralized website since it doesn't actually cut out the problem of "someone controls your data and controls the flow of your communication".
The only positive I can say is that it doesn't have the twitter API changes that made scraping and archiving a lot harder, so you can use usual tools like gallery-dl to archive the lunacy you find on there rather well as of this moment. They can "block" you as much as they want but it's not going to do shit against people who actually understand how this system works.
