This is basically what my friend and I were discussing a few days ago, that there are some ideas that you're simply not allowed to discuss or investigate because it might hurt someone's feefees, like the physical and mental differences between men and women, or among different racial groups. Even when it's pretty obvious that black people statistically rank lower than white people in educational achievement, you can't do any studies on this to determine a reason because it would be problematic no matter what you find. If it's genetic, then some people will use that as an excuse to discriminate, while others will use it as an excuse for lack of effort ("not your fault you're dumb, we'll just pass you anyway"). If it's not, then you're calling an entire group of people lazy, or maybe it's something to do with their socioeconomic background, which opens up another can of worms.

The biggest problem with this is that, by not allowing research into this line of thought, you're also making it harder to develop the best tools to aid the problem. Wide-scale cognitive studies could potentially provide insights into how different groups of people learn, and subsequently give schools and teachers better methods to instruct their classes. Instead, we continue to treat everyone as identical and throw a one-size-fits-all solution at the problem, and we wonder why our educational standards keep plummeting.

The trailers for D&D made it look like it was leaning a bit too strongly on making the men punching bags while the women did all the work, so people had some trepidation. The movie ended up being pretty well-balanced on the whole and gave everyone a chance to shine, and it was overall quite entertaining, so these critics admitted that they had been wrong but pleased to be.

Meanwhile, Barbie's trailers made it look like a goofy comedy with a slightly bizarre premise, but the resulting movie was a man-hating feminist screed. Yeah, no shit people are upset about not getting what they thought they were paying for, and so they're going to tell their audiences that it's not worth their time.
