An Eternal Champions movie, huh? So, Eternal Champions was intended as a Street Fighter II clone. My guess is it started production before SEGA had negotiated to get Street Fighter II Champion Edition on the Sega Genesis. It became the red headed step child of the platform. The first game was nerfed due to having to work with the SEGA activator, a glorified dance pad. The second game came out exclusively for the SEGA CD and was much better but only a few people (like yours truly) owned a SEGA CD and got it. The third game got cancelled because SEGA of Japan worried it was going to cannibalize sales for Virtua Fighter.

Eternal Champions was influenced by American comic books (not He-Man as the idiot says) which were much better back then. The character sprites were large and detailed. SEGA used a lot of tricks to increase the color pallet on their aging hardware and other graphical special effects. It wasn't Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat though. It wasn't even Fatal Fury or Samurai Shodown. Fated, it seems, to die in obscurity.

Emulate the Sega CD version if you are curious (which unfortunately never gets included in the various Sega collections). A six button joystick is a must for a good experience, I suggest the NeoGeo Arcade Stick Pro or one of Hori's offerings. I actually like it quite a bit, and it isn't a low effort release. The movie will probably not be good, but we'll see. (It might not even get made.)
