Not to mention self-promotion has ALWAYS been part of the "artists" skill set. There was a ton of guys who could could paint like Raphael in the Renaissance, but it Raphael was the guy who was at every party of every big patron in Italy (well, not "Italy" as we know it, but you get the gist), kissing ass, showing drafts and being sociable (not to mention fucking anything on sight)
And you don't even have to be a social butterfly, Hemingway was known as a curmundgeon, but he still went and made public readings of his books and could turn up the charm when he wanted, and people were in awe of his own story that Hemingway embellished the fuck out of it to sell books.
So no Robert, you tubers back then were just as much a botton of the barrel as they are now, and regardless of whatever "artistic" merits one might have, it means dick with a side of balls if you are can't sell it.
