Honestly I just think a lot of the old fans just decided to be done for one reason or another. I checked out of Marvel after Endgame, and I hated the second new Star Wars movie so I shrugged and was done there too. I'm not the only one. There's an ocean of nerd crap I can retreat too when things get too normified. When the normies get bored and walk away the bloated corpses of the old franchises will finally be taken off life support and they'll find a new hobby to shit up. Tale as old as time.

Trust, once lost, is not easily regained. This is why even releases in franchises that aren't as bad as what came before them (like Skeleton Crew for Star Wars) aren't doing so well, because these idiotic studios already beat the golden goose to death in front of the fans. It doesn't really matter if something turns out to be alright or even good, most former fans simply don't trust the studios to make something worth watching and aren't willing to give them the benefit of the doubt anymore. It would take years of actually producing things that were of good quality to undo the damage of torching the franchise entirely, and even then there would still be that nagging doubt in the back of your mind that it could all go south again, because we've already seen it happen.

I also got off the Marvel boat post-Endgame, and I wouldn't even have seen anything after TLJ if not for my dad refusing to totally let go of Star Wars (although he doesn't give a shit about the TV shows and doesn't seem to have much interest in any modern Disney Wars bullshit at all anymore). Despite being just a casual fan of the MCU, only watching it for something to do with my friend, I could tell that Marvel was going to get worse, and Star Wars burned me too many times. While I don't care what happens to capeshit, I do not trust Disney to create anything good from Star Wars again, not without completely cleaning house and starting fresh, which they won't do. As long as Kathleen Kennedy has her claws in the franchise, they will continue producing soulless dreck that shits all over George's legacy. And even if they did manage to course correct and make Star Wars worth watching again, it would take many years before I was finally willing to trust them with something sight unseen.

At any rate, his actual job is as a self-employed critic. What else would his access to press screenings be for? Certainly not for the Theory channels, as their entire brand is just pointless speculation about shit coming out months or years later. He's not writing for any publication anymore, he's just making video reviews on YouTube. And in that regard, he doesn't have a boss beyond himself. If he doesn't consider that a job, he should stop taking advantage of BOFCA's good grace in letting him be part of their club and refrain from going to press screenings. But he won't because he likes being above the plebs by getting to see things earlier than they do.

Ten years ago (Holy shit does time fly) he finally got fired from Escapist for his bullshit and moved to his own youtube channel, where his videos easily brought in six figure views, and his newly made patreon got him $3500 a month. Had he stuck with his old schedule of two videos per week, he would have made more money than on Escapist, and could have financed a movie or something. The problem is, as he admitted, without a steady pay check he sees no incentive in getting videos out on a reliable schedule. He also believes that it's still 2008 and unless you work for an outlet, you don't count as a real critic and also you won't make any real money.

He went for any gig he could get, despite his channel doing so well. While he later got back his Screw Attack videos, he likely made less off of those than he would have if they were on his own channel. Same with Geek, who only took him because they were desperate for views. This damaged his channel, until the second Escapist hiring, when he completely abandoned it for a year while pissing off Escapist subscribers. The scenario ended up being lose-lose for Bob and Escapist, but he was so happy to be back where he had been five years prior that he never saw it.

These days, it makes more sense for him to prioritize something else. He wants to quit but doesn't think he can because he's too scared to do something else and won't make the leap. Also, anyone with an HR department would immediately trash his resume once they do their Google search. Theory on the other hand are likely paying him more than any of his videos make, since they actually get views, but it's not sustainable.

As you said, he should be focusing on making things that will get people donating to his patreon or coming to his channel more. But he won't because he's burnt out on it and wants to leave. Which is fine, if he actually did do that and got a real job. But he also wants to be a professional critic to own the haters, and so won't leave unless someone drops something in his lap. And that'll never happen because that's not how the real world works.

Disney just isn't good at Star Wars.

I don't just say that because of what they've made, I say that because of what they haven't made. If you look at all the projects they've announced that early got quietly cancelled or trapped in development hell, it'll make your head spin. Unproduced pitches are nothing new, but they keep taking them far enough to get publicly announced and nothing comes from it. It just screams "We don't know what we're doing, what direction to go or how to finish what we try to start. We're totally lost."

As for what they actually do put out, it's wildly inconsistent in quality. You have Andor and the first two seasons of Mandaloria, which are genuinely good -- and perhaps not coincidentally, the ones that have the least interference from Disney execs., Then you have stuff like Ashoka and Boba Fett which are mediocre and boring, stuff like Skeleton Crew and Obi-Wan which are "okay" and finally, at the bottom of the pit, you have shit like Mandalorian season 3 and Acolyte which are just fucking awful. So the quality varies wildly, which tells me there's nobody in charge with a major vision or plan.

But once you cut out the outliers, you're left with what Bob talked about: the "Mid-to-Decent" stuff. Now, putting out a "mid-to-decent" piece of entertainment is fine every once in a while. The problem comes when you start making tons of them over and over. Even in the best case scenario where they're "decent" the repetition and overexposure is what ultimately kills you. People get sick of seeing "just decent" things constantly. It's where the term "slop" comes from. Sometimes, slop can taste pretty good, fill you up on an empty stomach. But it's still just that: slop. Hastily assembled sustenance that's purely utilitarian. You'll get sick of it if you eat it every day, and you'll be screaming for something else. Just like if you were seeing a movie with a date or watching TV while smoking weed, you'd probably be pretty entertained by The Eternals or Ant Man 3. But once you get three or four of those a year, it's too fucking much.

You start to ask: "Why are you even making this movie if you have nothing new to say?" Sure, no movie "needs to" exist, but if you want someone to watch and enjoy it, you need to give them a pretty convincing reason to. I now direct you to this excellent moment from the film Adaptation:

"Why the fuck are you wasting my precious two hours? I don't have any use for it!"

I think all of us can empathize with the feeling of not being where you want to be in life. We have our hopes and dreams, then shit happens. Maturity is coming to terms with this reality and making the most of what you have. You don't necessarily have to give up on your dreams, but understanding that it may not happen the way you want it to is a part of growing up.

Bob is in his mid-40s now and is still incapable of handling this basic fact. He's ashamed of his current position, being both a low-rent script jockey for a more successful channel that doesn't even mention his existence beyond the description box that nobody reads, and a middling YouTube movie reviewer whose best days are long behind him. He hates that his career for the better part of two decades has been entirely online; much like many other YouTubers, he views it as inferior to traditional media even when it's possible to get way more eyeballs on your stuff, with nobody gatekeeping your ability to produce what you want (aside from the YouTube censors, anyway). He longs to be a highly-paid and wildly successful screenwriter (or even better, an idea guy, so he doesn't have to do anywhere near as much work), hobnobbing with the Hollywood elite, getting the credit for the billion-dollar movie ideas he's convinced he comes up with on a daily basis.

And that's the thing: he could use that shame as the driving force to get him to improve, to do more, to make moves towards that ideal future he sees for himself. Write up a screenplay, look for entry-level film production work, produce his own low-budget flick. But he doesn't because, in the end, he's fat, lazy, and stupid. It's simply too much effort for him to try and make a change in his life, and coasting on inertia is at least keeping him alive (that and the benevolence of his family). He'd rather just continue to do the same thing as always and wait for the day when someone finally notices how awesome he truly is and hands him a fat paycheck for his brilliant ideas. And every day that doesn't happen, he'll just blame it on his latest bugaboo.

It only seems complicated because it's self-contradicting. It's actually quite simple: Bob wants to be a movie snob with refined tastes, but he only likes popcorn flicks. It's the conflict of his whole life. He wants to be in "The Elite" but isn't. It's the common plight of the Midwit. Someone who wants to be special and important but is only average. (It's funny because 'the elite' is a farcical concept in the first place, but that's another discussion.)

The Left believes in the irrational "Living Tree" doctrine on the Constitution, completely throwing out the concept of "Strict Constructionism". "Living Tree" concept is basically Judges get to make up whatever fucking law they want, because new ideas like Abortion weren't mentioned in the Constitution, therefore it should "evolve" and judges should expand their understanding of the document to somehow include things that weren't mentioned (such as "abortion rights" filed under the fig leaf of "Right to Privacy"). "Living Tree" is a complete fucking communist concept and is completely destructive to the concept of Inalienable Rights.
