The MovieBob thread is a pretty good place to also just talk about big media franchises, since they're like the only thing Bob ever talks about when he isn't fantasizing about building a new Auschwitz in Kentucky (which will never happen because building it would require him to do manual labor.) so I'm gonna use this opportunity to talk about Franchise Fatigue.

Some people say it isn't real, either arguing it's just a cope for fanboys, or sometimes the fanboys will say it's not real and blame the industry's problems on something else. But in my opinion, it's absolutely real. Both for the movie-going public and for studios alike.

I remember when Disney first announced they'd be making a new Star Wars movie every year, I said to myself "people are gonna get so sick of these fucking movies if you do that." I'm still quite proud to say I was right. The only thing I got wrong is how damn fast it happened. While Force Awakens was well-received, Rogue One had a mixed reaction and everything else after is now so poorly recieved that people are rethinking their dislike of the prequels. Now, the problem with those movies is that they were a misguided, mismanaged mess, but even the "decent" stuff suffers from a similar problem now.

I've talked to people who used to follow the MCU religiously and then they're like "yeah I stopped trying to keep up a long time ago, there's just too much." No matter how good your movies are, if people feel overwhelmed by the amount of them you put out there, they're just gonna give up and wait for the next "best" one to come out. That's why Deadpool and Wolverine felt like fucking mana from the heavens despite only being a standard Marvel film, among other reasons.

Studios suffer from too many movies because they have to stretch resources and manpower thing, juggling multiple projects at a time. Inevitably you have to rush things out and cut corners, leading to things like MODOK being the shittiest fucking CGI effect I've ever seen in my goddamn life. The more time passes, the more fucking shocked I am that Ant-Man 3 MODOK ever got approved. But that's the kind of shit that slips through the cracks when you're so horribly overextended you put out THREE movies in ONE YEAR.

It's a pretty good example of "Corporate Necrosis." Corporations have to grow every single fucking year or else they're considered "failing" and eventually there's no way to increase their size without paradoxically doing shit that's actively detrimental to your bottom line. The beast gets too big to manage itself effectively and its heart gives out. This shit is how Rome fell.
