One of the main reasons progressivism had such a grip on culture is moderate appearances and positions, and waking up every single day to rage on the internet shatters that good image. Goodwill is not an unlimited resource, and it's one that's lost much more easily than it's built up.
Take pronouns- of course it makes sense to not just use "his" and "its" all the time, and substitute "their", but when you're getting into the whole "xer/xim" territory you've lost the plot, and people can be forgiven for not being able to keep up with a multitude of different pronouns. At that point, you've either inspired apathy or outright pleasure in resistance.
that's not even getting into the fact that when you talk directly to a person, the pronouns you will be using are you/your/yours, not anything else. So they actually want to police how you speak about them
to other people.
