Boromir I actually like quite a lot; even as a kid on my first reading it felt like the guy had a sign taped to his head reading I WILL STEAL THE RING. I felt like the movie communicated his conflicted nature quite well, largely because Sean Bean's performance is downright staggering. Better than David Wenham or John Noble. The departures from the book they took with Faramir were irritating, but I appreciated the opportunity to actually see Osgiliath on screen. Denethor is just unforgivable.

I think the worst sin is the failure to effectively show that Arnor even existed. The relationship between the two kingdoms and the line of Anarion and the line of Isildur is incredibly complicated, but it felt like there was barely even an effort to tell that story.

So to tie this back into Bob. Because he and his ilk like to think to Nerds are all "the beard is the wrong shade" when they're complaining. But I despise them taking the Hobbits to Osgiliath. Because Faramir is the one man who did the right thing unquestionably. He did what his brother completely failed at and what even Aragorn was afraid he would fail at doing. Faramir outright rejected the ring and sent it on its way.

And for him to do this is to miss what Tolkien says on good and evil. Because, Faramir isn't the exception to Evil. He is the exception to good. Tolkien was showing that even as fallible as Men are. Even among them are those who can rise above that, unquestionably.

And to continue tying this back to Bob. I am nobody. Just a history teacher, who doesn't even really like movies. And I have come up with thousands and thousands of words on tiny little things about the themes and meanings and significances to their work, to their authors, and to the zeitgeist to which they contribute.

All the while a fat idiot cant get enough correct about the basic plot to create a 140 character tweet, and is a "famous" enough movie critic to be hired by websites. This is why we are getting stupider boys.

I think if anything comparing Bob to a Lord of The Rings character would be an insult to Tolkien. Though, I would love to see someone compare Bob to a H.P. Lovecraft story.

In initially seizing Frodo, he seems less tempted by the Ring's power than he is by a chance to finally please his father.

This is, of course, a pretty big failure to grok Tolkien's themes of good and evil and replace them with a stereotypical dysfunctional family, but in the end I think Faramir's delay in rejecting the Ring doesn't do significantly more harm to the character than Aragorn's reluctance to be King (and, actually ... I consider that pretty damaging).

And to tie this back to Bob, it's nice to have a debate about this without either of us sneering that the other isn't a person.

Second, this defeats the purpose of Twitter. Twitter was intended to be a microblogging website, a place you can update your status in real time. You don't write short stories.

Like you said, its a lame substitute, and I still think it misses the point, but you are right in that it isn't out of nowhere at least.

Aragorn I have always forgiven, because my real spicy take on LotR is it doesn't really have character arcs. Its a book about events. (wonder if thats a quote that will ever appear in a tweet) And so I think thats always contributed to the idea of it being called unfilmable. And so, I think it was marginally alright to set Aragorn's character back like that. Because it would have been a strange movie without it. Especially because these are really Aragorn's movies. Especially especially after Fellowship. Its a sacrifice you have to make for adaptation.

Now don't ask me to rationalize how I am okay with that but not Faramir. Because long answer I like Faramir a lot. Short answer, fuck you.

EDIT: I FORGOT TO SAY BESIDES SAM! He totally has a character arc. As does Frodo and Smeagol. And my point about the movies being about Aragorn is that they did kind of add that on top of all the stuff with Frodo and Sam whereas the books really didn't.

The Palantiri were seeing stones made by the High Elves of Valinor, mainly to communicate and see things with each other. They were actually gifts the Elves gave to those on the Isle of Numenor, AKA not-Atlantis, who still were true to Eru Illuvatar, aka Not-God, teachings and not obssessed with death and dominance over the material realm.

The seven stones they mention or use in the books were the only ones that were able to be saved from the Fall, and were never evil to begin with. Hell, one of the stones is purely connected to the Undying Lands just so elves who wish to stay and ferry others out West can feel at ease there by sating their desires to go there to finish the job.

They only became corrupt because Sauron got his hands on the Ithil Stone, because Minas Morgul, that glowy place the Black Riders came out from, was originally a great city of Gondor that had one of them. He's a big nasty fallen angel with a powerful will to dominate, so most people trying to use it will not be able to deal with that shit. So he did exactly as you stated.

This is another example of why he's a lazy stupid asshole who had to be bribed by mommy to read. He ain't ever read a book unless it's Mario related, or he was forced to for rewards at home. And it's not like you even HAVE to know Tolkien's notes or read shit like the Silmarilion either; there's details on this in the books themselves. They are and were not evil; merely tools that can be used as such.

That sounds familiar but I don't know when it happened. Kind of like the infamous "autism blackface" rant he went on years ago. If you're talking about the "personal account" he had for a while, he started it sometime in early 2020, lost interest when he couldn't get a blue check mark for it, then completely abandoned it in October when he got kicked off Escapist for the final time. So maybe that's where you could look?
