I recall in his Deathly Hallows review that he was mostly tepid toward the IP. He seemed professionally obligated to acknowledge what the series accomplished but wasn't personally invested. The hate definitely came later.
It's worth remembering that, quite famously, Rowling was in dire financial and personal straits when she struck the mother lode of IPs. On the public dole, just divorced, in her mid-30s, just lost her mother, if I remember correctly. Then literally overnight she became the biggest fantasy writer of the 1990s-2000s. And there's Bob -- his situation not too much better, struggling in the trenches, not getting any younger -- and not one of his numbfuck ideas can get .00001% of Harry Potter's success. That rags to riches story should be him, have no doubt of it.
Envy and bitterness are a big part of Bob's makeup. If that weren't the case, his vitriol wouldn't be nearly as over the top. This sort of ugliness often comes from profound frustration and resentment.
