So, I breezed past these videos earlier, but then I remembered that Scream 4 was one of Bob's more infamous ones and gave it a rewatch.
The reason it's infamous is because in the opening, he mopes and whines that it made him less special because he was the movie guy who knew everything until the first Scream came out and turned him into a joke... when he was 15. In the new section, he clarifies that that was supposed to be a joke because he was clearly using a sarcastic tone of voice, and he's more pissed off that people took that story seriously than he ever was pissed off at the Scream franchise. There are two problems with that. The first being that, obviously, Bob's tone is barely different from his regular one so it doesn't come across as any different. Secondly, because that story is just so in character for Bob that I don't believe him when he says he wasn't serious.
But the main one? Because he has such a passionate venom throughout the review that he clearly is bringing his own anger at the franchise into the mix. No, it's not Pixels, mostly because Bob was still living at home and couldn't raise his voice too loud without making his parents angry for waking them, but there is still clearly a bitterness even back then at the franchise, its creators, and the people who star in it. He makes it a point that the actors didn't have big careers outside of the franchise (Courtney Cox making a millions dollars per episode of Friends apparently doesn't count) and blames it for what horror movies became after this.
So no, I genuinely believe Bob's story at the beginning. He admits he found being compared to the Scream guy annoying if he ever brought up any movie trivia, but I doubt he's telling the whole truth. Being a movie guy took over being a gamer guy for him when he got too old to be cool for being one. And when that got taken away from him, as he points out in the video, he had nothing else because he was an unathletic moron. Also I genuinely believe he was being obnoxious when he did it so the Scream comparison was more laughing at Bob than laughing with him.
Most likely, he got most of the trivia he knew wrong.
Inquiring minds would sure love to know who BC Howard was talking about that went to bat for our boy Bob.
Tony Goldmark.
