Also, the Zero Wing translation is still menacing. You can tell the villain is a villain. It's not some thing written by some idiot who is deflating the scene by making goofy jokes or importing memes from 20 years ago. For example, when I was playing Dragon Quest Builders 2 story mode, the "wonderful" translator included this meme:

Both translations are off, one was by a person who I believe did his best with his limited knowledge of English, the other was a person on a higher budget and higher profile game who was just goofing off. This kind of stuff makes going through story mode more of a chore to get to the sandbox mode.

A more famous example is when a translator changed the word tsundere in a translation of a game to "fragile male ego." At this point, tsundere is practically a loan word in English. Maybe there are people who don't know what it means, but there are enough people who know what it means to get angry about a translation like that.

Bob, of course, is both disingenuous and a retard. His use of "All Your Base" here shows he didn't get the meme or why it became popular. I also believes he knows it was an amateur translation done on the cheap by a Japanese person, so he's being disingenuous to own the chuds. Dragon Quest began receiving colorful translations since around DQ8, and I'm pretty sure that it's done with the cooperation and collaboration of the Japanese team. It would have to, considering some of the incredible wordplay worked into some things. Anyway, even in their home of Japan, this and many other games insert Japanese pop culture references at random. It's nowhere near the concept of inserting an internet meme inappropriately or totally rewriting a scene. Here, it's truly done in service of the game as the players expect.
