True. In my circles I've often seen it as the "clown nose on/off" defense especially brought up with Jon Stewart and others.

Thing is, Bob's humor applies even when he's not trying to be defensive. So a completely random topic will come up, and then Bob will make what he is convinced is a super clever joke through layers of obscure references and "witty" word play.

the funny thing about that section from Positron there about how "Twitter acquiesced to censorship from India and Turkey" is that Brazil actually has freedom of speech in its constitution. Turkey is a very different story. Also, previous Twitter head had gone along with the fucking Brazil censorship up to this point. India has freedom of speech in its constitution but there are "reasonable restrictions".


So yeah, India's freedom of speech 'guarantees' are a lot like Canada's. Elon's defense of his actions regarding Turkey and India was framed as not being able to go above the laws of the state. Y'know, I really don't get why Bob is so excited that James Gunn is just ripping off...excuse me, "adapting" a famous DC comic storyline instead of doing anything remotely original. Aside from the fact that he's apparently trying to speedrun this and probably end up with the exact same problem that the DCEU had (rushing past putting the pieces on the board and skipping to slamming action figures together while making "whoosh pow kablam" noises), anyone with passing interest can just look up the whole storyline and say, "oh that's how it's gonna go down? alright, whatever" and skip out. Hell, the MCU had this problem to an extent with Infinity War; of course Thanos would get the McGuffins and win, and of course the heroes would resurrect everyone in the next movie. And now that they're just checking off every famous storyline from the last decade or two, there's really no surprises left there either.

I get that an adaptation can be different enough from the source material to be fun on its own, and I don't deny the appeal of seeing a story you enjoyed in one medium translated into another. But those are usually single works that stand alone, not a cinematic universe monstrosity. This is the exact same problem that basically makes capeshit comics unreadable these days, but they don't really seem to give a shit.

Of course, I know why he's excited: it's a lot less work doing speculation when the answers are literally right there in front of you, and there's a much lower chance of being wrong. Bob can pretend to be a pop culture Nostradamus and smugly proclaim he was right without having to do any more effort than a Wikipedia search. That, and he cannot stop dicksucking James Gunn at all.

You can do the "orcs aren't wholly irredeemable bloodthirsty monsters" thing without it being shallow and stupid. Showing a few orcs just commiserating around a fire is all you really need to show that they're conscious beings. Maybe a band not affiliated with Sauron, but still getting up to the usual orcish shenanigans, doing so not because they revel in bloodshed or are being controlled by a dark power, but because they're taking what they think is rightfully theirs. Tolkien didn't like the idea of orcs being incapable of doing good, but he figured that by their nature they would tend towards evil, much as any human brought up with those sorts of standards.

Showing an orc tearfully begging not to be forced to leave his wife and child is the retarded scriptwriter's lazy attempt to show that orcs dindu nuffin. It's a cheap way to tug at the viewer's heartstrings instead of actually considering the nature of the world of Middle-earth and using that to write them believably. Fuck Bob for making excuses for bad writing. Takes one to know one, I guess.
