Never seen it, but let's go with another type of show that's equivalent to the MCU: Soap Operas. The longest runners, like The Young and the Restless or Days of Our Lives. Never watched them, but my grandmother was a fan, much like a lot of housewives, because there was always something to hook you. A shocking turn, a cliffhanger for the next episode, and a story that could go on for years with characters that these women could sink their teeth into.

And the reason they lasted so long is because they never lost sight of what they were: Schlocky drama serials for bored housewives. They never tried to get the male demographic or chase some phantom modern audience. Of course, I could be completely wrong and everything's about feminism now, but for the majority of their runs, they knew what they were and who they were for.

The MCU forgot about that and tried to chase people who had no interest in them.

Anybody who says the MCU's downfall was because of covid is grasping at straws. Deadpool and Wolverine was very successful and well-received and was a last minute production of a pre-covid pitch. Covid might have been when things started going downhill, but the pandemic has been over since 2022. Plenty of time to turn things around. He's also grasping at straws when he keeps blaming "the algorithim" for the popularity of anti-Hollywood content. People only bother watching these videos because they agree with them in the first place. It's also laughable for him to insist these videos are making us "angrier and sadder" when his entire Twitter feed is just him wallowing in his own anger and misery. If the person who insists he can't be happy while 51% of the population are alive is giving you advice on happiness, it's probably not worth listening to.

The "problem" is so easy and simple: People like good movies and don't like bad ones. They enjoy mocking bad movies, and pointing out their flaws so that people learn to avoid the same mistakes. But when a movie is good or even just "okay" they don't want to pick on it.

Hell, Spider-Man 3 came out at the tail end of the pandemic and did well critically and commercially. So did the latest Batman movie. So clearly there's still an audience for superhero movies. The problem is the studios didn't want to make those types of movies, they wanted to make She-Hulk and The Eternals, and they sucked.

I think the biggest factor in the MCU's decline wasn't the pandemic, but Endgame. The MCU having to do a "soft reset" without their most iconic actors and characters really did a number on it. With the except of No Way Home, Phase 4 ranges from middling (if you're generous) to absolute trash. Then you have Phase 5, which has been a mess.

There's no direction, vision or structure. Everything has been cast helplessly to the wind and all the attempts to build a new "universe" have bottomed up. It's an MCU without the Avengers. No anchor point. And after ten movies it's still entirely unclear how any of it is going to come together into anything resembling a coherent narrative. Your legacy characters are all dead or retired, your new characters aren't strong enough to carry a single movie, let alone a franchise, and after ten damn movies and lord knows how many shows, you still haven't established a major plot thread to tie everything together. The entire first phase of Marvel happened in only six films.

Think about that: TEN movies and we still haven't gotten a fucking point yet, nor a strong enough cast of characters to make for a new Avengers lineup. That's why people hate the current MCU: it's a shitshow with no good ideas and even the most diehard fans are just praying for it to get better.

Now, in fairness, nine of those movies came out over the span of only three years, so obviously they're not gonna have a lot of time to plan out or set things up, but that's why you don't put out three damn movies in one year.

They've aged poorly even among popular creators who did them, and the inclusion of storylines (which begun in Overthinker episode 42 "Double Trouble") was one of the first things about his online videos that almost everyone couldn't stand. This began when the first storyline had Bob being teleported to Wario's Woods while his first alternate-character (meaning it was just him in a different outfit with a different voice), the Antithinker, took over his show to make a few videos on his own warped "dudebro" view of gaming history where anything that wasn't a realistic FPS was soooo gay and queer. Even Extra Credits and Matpat, as well as other people who liked Bob's videos at the time weren't a fan, and subtly begged him to stop.

Needless to say, it was one of the first times there started to be a significant backlash against Bob. He was still well-liked, even if people in his Blogger comments section had pet-peeves about his Nintendo/nostalgia bias and things like that. They saw the storylines as Bob losing some of his smart-commentary uniqueness and trying to become a different type of creator to chase the popular-at-the-time Angry Reviewer/TGWTG trend, and found the scenes and humor (these were meant to be a "comedic framing device", remember) to be underwhelming, poorly-produced, unfunny, and full of references instead of a real story arc, which rubbed them the wrong way, given that Bob had already made his mark on The Escapist as a movie critic and was much harsher towards movies like Bayformers or Pixels for making similar egregious filmmaking mistakes, yet never saw the same faults within his own work, which made his reviews a tad more difficult to take seriously before the age of "it agrees with my worldview so it's good".

Compared to Social Justice Bob or Daily Mayoghoul Genocide Social Media Bob, Storyline-Wannabe Bob seems tame by comparison. Bob probably had fun making them "feeling like a real filmmaker" because he was recording scenes and getting paid to do it, and remembers one of his first backlashes with nothing but fondness because of that, no matter what the rabble spectator gallery has to say about it.
