How many times have they done the genderbending thing in modern media, or on a related note, a masked character that is revealed to be a woman later? How many times has it been actually well-written, and how many times has it been some insufferable girlboss character? I guarantee you, it's nearly always the latter (possibly always, as I legitimately can't think of an example of the former). After years and years of watching tiny women beat up men many times their size, it's become simple pattern recognition at this point: when Hollywood shoves a woman into a role that she wasn't meant for, inevitably it turns out to be shit.
Honestly, if this sort of thing had been done in the 90s, it probably would have been well-received and even entertaining, back when movies weren't ashamed to have sex appeal in them. Hell, remember Mystique from the original X-Men movies? That alone proves the point. There would be no outrage because the movie would be giving viewers what they wanted. Sure, a couple comics nerds might get mad, but there are always comic nerds getting mad about anything.
