I would assume he likely did what a lot of self-employed people do and didn't pay both the employee and employer portion of Social Security. Only reason I know this is I've had family that were self-employed before and they've all said that's the main reason to not be self-employed.

A while ago, I used to do comparisons of Bob's income to what he would get for minimum wage in Mass. and he was barely making more than a forty hour work week when you combine patreon and youtube (MA min wage is $15 for anyone not aware). But of course, this is all before tax.
