Yeah I believe they know a lot more than they are letting on, especially since the couple lived with them for a year beforehand. There is no doubt in my mind they saw the abuse first hand and did nothing about it. They probably even helped their son abuse & gaslight her, as is common in these sorts of things.

This is the part where I am confused. If a person is labeled as a "person of interest" and not a suspect, and the police find them wandering around somewhere, can they just say "fuck off" and the cops have no ability to do anything about that or take them in? They can't just kidnap someone for being a person of interest, right? So are they even looking for him, with no power to do shit if they find him? How are they able to fund their police force/FBI looking for someone who isn't even a suspect?

Brian either offed himself and made sure his body was there in the water for the gators, or he threw down his backpack on the side and a few pieces of clothing into the water while he pulls a runner hoping the cops think that he is dead. It really is a coin toss at this point. If he is trying to pull a runner, I don't think that he is smart enough to get away for long. He is just prolonging the inevitable and continuing to make himself look more and more guilty.
Missing black people in 2021... You are a cop. Derek Chauvin has just been convicted of murder. Cities were burned down just to make sure he was convicted. The missing black person has been mixed up with either drugs, gangs or has a wrap sheet. The people in the neighborhood don't want to talk to you and are openly antagonistic towards you. Odds are the missing black person fell upon foul play. If you track this down at some point you will have to end up arresting an angry black man with a gun who may be high on drugs who is more than willing to suicide by cops. It just isn't worth it to the cop. Have his life ruined even if he is found innocent.
The police have a dead body suspected murder. Absolutely no one in the public is going to hang the cops for investigating this. But they absolutely will crucify the police for NOT investigating this. Everyone knows the score. Brian is just a "person of interest" until he either looks like he is going to pull a runner, or he refuses to sit down and talk with the police. At that point they will arrest him on some minor charges and hope that in the mean time they can build up a sufficient case to keep him behind bars. The cops don't want to charge him because they want Brian to THINK he can still talk his way out of this. Once they get him talking he is absolutely toast.

I have recently found out that the last time she was spotted alive, she was eating at the Merry Piglet with her boyfriend. They had a huge argument and her boyfriend went back into the restaurant four times to argue with staff about the price and quality of the food. I can personally attest that the Merry Piglet is fucking garbage and you couldn't pay me to eat there again. I was dragged in there by friends who think that Tex-Mex is not the work of Satan (scum). I had an 18 fucking dollar pork chimichanga that tasted like ass and the plates and silverware were half washed. Their salsa tasted like cilantro flavored water. I am angry and ashamed to have given money to that establishment and can fully understand how their food would indirectly cause a murder.
