Bon Appetit is a foodie youtube channel, with over 6 million subscribers owned by Conde Nest. It got even bigger during the lockdown, because it made a big push to up production rather than ramping down. If you watch cooking videos on YouTube then at some point a Bon Appetit video will have been dumped in your feed.

The editor Adam Rapoport resigned today after a picture of him in 'Brownface' from 2003 was circulated. Something he had previously apologised for in 2014. See below, I don't see it myself, but since he'd previously admitted in 2014 that it was brownface he wasn't able to deny it now.

Anyway, what makes it significant is that his team of 'editors' aren't even pretending that it was about the picture. They're flat out admitting that they took advantage of the Gerorge Floyd chaos to get rid of him, because he wouldn't let them do videos on Peurto Rican food, because he said US audiences were unfamiliar with the cooking techniques involved.

Anyway I think it's interesting, as an example of companies cleaning shop. It got some coverage from an actual brown person on The Hill.

What's most unctuous is the reaction of the white members of his team (ie the ones not covered in tattoos). Who are desperately trying to ingratiate themselves with the new regime.

Including Blonde Totty Molly baz, who of all the editors worked most with Rapport. Hilariously her colleagues are claiming he only worked with her because she was white.

I don’t really care about this faggot, and if he wants to bend over and let them fuck him in the ass without fighting back then good.

I used to subscribe to the Bon Appetit magazine for about five years (roughly 2011-2016). There were some good recipes and ideas I still use (spreading mayonnaise on outside grilled cheese to make better browning), as well as some interesting articles about food and restaurant culture, including spending nearly a 24 hours at a Waffle House in the south and noting the exotic customs (to New Yorkers) the locals had, like praying before a meal.

Good christ. Is there any form of media these weirdos haven't infiltrated?

So I guess they will be making mud cookies and fly cakes now.

Seems like this was the perfect chance to let some steam off, to say the least. I was reading the /ck/ thread about it.
And it looks like it's a cancel-fest, eveyone who isn't an exotic precious baby of colour, or female jew* is getting cancelled
From the top of my head:
Delany said fag once and made a joke about it.
Chris did a "poor" attempt at filipino cuisine.
Sohla is trying to get more brown people into BA, and and complains about not getting paid enough compared to other people who are indeed her seniors, mind you, she got kicked off serious eats for the same reason.
And there's more.
Sorry for the half assed post but I'm on the bus, lol.

One of the things I actually rather liked about Bon Appetit is the politics rarely, if ever, made it into their media. So long as this cancelfest doesn't take out Brad or Claire I really don't care. The main chick complaining is one of the least talented hosts they have, I can see why she's making a stink and trying to find other ways to elevate her popularity, because it sure af isn't going to come from her videos.

It's a shame that another good thing is ruined by a talent-less and bitter woman. Their videos were a step above meme stuff like Tasty but not as autistic as videos by real chefs. Just to summarize, Sohla had opened a restaurant in Williamsburg (white hipster capitol of NYC) and it failed, allegedly because of "racism". You can read the article about it here:

TL;DR her food was incredibly overpriced because they had to use gourmet ingredients (including mozzarella imported from Italy, which they decided to FRY) and honestly, there's nothing special about the menu at all. Here it is for anyone who's curious:

And as someone who lives in this godforsaken city, these prices are in-line with your more upscale hipster restaurants. Why would you go to to some subpar "comfort food" place when the same prices can get you a nice meal at an upscale French restaurant? Not to mention there's countless other places to get a whole fried chicken without the feet still attached.

Anyways that's my little rant. It seems like we can't even enjoy cooking videos anymore without cancel culture and white guilt. All because someone didn't know how to negotiate her employment contract and took an entry level position despite her 10+ years of cooking experience.

Thanks for the thorough reply. Here's an article about it with more context.
Deep frying burrata to make a glorified mozzarella stick sounds like a crime, and almost 60 for a whole chicken? Thanks but I'd rather go to Cafe Milano and LARP as a statesman.
And for last, I don't discard the notion that Sohla was so excited to get in BA that sher perhaps didn't read the contract properly or something, it's a shame really, she knows how to cook and is somewhat charismatic and didn't give an uppity vibe compared to, say, Molly. This could've been avoided by just talking to the head honchos.

I realize that I'm a hick from a small town, but $80+ after tax and tip for a whole chicken and a couple of sides is obscene.
I know, right? I'm from south america and that's a lot of money for me to spend in one meal, and even though I understand it's NYC, you could very well eat in a more reputable place for that price.
I guess that selling diner-esque/comfort food with a high markup in Brooklyn doesn't fly.
Honestly she could've been a bit more mature about it and take advantage of her and her husband's roots, make some fusion food to keep it interesting and "game" the system so to speak. At least it would be way more interesting to see a bengali-bolivian-egyptian kind of mix, instead of a hot take (tm) on common food. One last thought, perhaps a restaurant was too much and maybe hole-in-the-wall kind of gig was the better choice.
Anyways, you really have to be a fuck up that even Kenji kicks you out, lmao.

Decided to check /ck/ before clicking post and found about this person.
the tl;dr is that she leaked that Rapo pic, and has been salty about Delany getting the job she wants and having decent success, basically Alex is renting a whole penthouse in her head without paying a dime, what lad.

And finally: NY Times article about the whole ordeal.

Read today that Rick, Sola, and Priya are no longer going to be in videos because negations fell through.
Shame, they were my favs along with brad and molly. I never liked Claire, she seemed like an uptight privileged bitch. Chris can get a little too <<puzzle piece>> at times.

This menu is racist. Worshipping the west by importing European produce. Why not support local BIPOC farmers and green grocers? Stop whitewashing fried chicken with burrata reee

...and little of value was lost! (I'll miss Priya a bit, though, just because she was always so chipper.)

edit: 🤦‍♂️

Okay, first off, Bon Appetit is a magazine. This channel is connected to the magazine. Secondly, I'm sick of threads being started solely to kvetch about culture war bullshit. This is getting locked.
