Borderlands (1, 2, 3, The Pre-Sequel, TftB)

While everyone waits for BL3, the current BL games are getting an update in a week or so (free for those that own them) that basically remasters them in different ways and backports nicer features from the later games to the earlier ones.

:Jew: :Jew: Jewish:
fucking Randy did a magic trick on my dick and threw out a goddamn rerelease of the one game on Earth I would be thrilled to play on console, fuck. :Jew: :Jew: :Jew: :thief:

They killed Scooter in Tales

I'm not touching this game solely for that reason
Scooter hasn't been the same person or really a relevant character in the series, I'm sorry you feel that way about a 4chan Underageb& as a character. He didn't even fuck a single lady.

All Borderlands 3 needs is an option to disable 100% of the dialogue and move the objective details into the quest text instead (the way MMOs do it). World of Warcraft may still be cringey as fuck, but at least they're not screaming the memes into your ear.
So basically, make it Morrowind with Guns? Are you insane? You can only remember how to do anything in Morrowind cause you can walk forwards and get where you need to go. Those questlines are a bitch.

Dude, I don't even think you liked the series at all to be this cynical of an actually decent, if not top tier in engine traier.
I played 1 and 2 to completion on xbox 360 and once I got a non-potato pc, I played 2 again to completion. Across all platforms I had more than 200 hours on the series. I played a little of the presequel before chucking it, (much like 2k chucked the Australian studio that made it.) and Tales of didn't appeal to me at all.

Trailer looks good. Not great, but its showing off the improved art style of UE4s engine.
I mean, if I were launching a reveal trailer I would want it to look great, not good, and again, I feel like there's not much there that couldn't be done on the older systems, and the borderlands 2 trailer was also in-game footage, so I don't think that's all that special. Given the environments they show off, you could have told me that this game was on the same planet as 1 or 2 and I would totally believe you. I sure as shit hope that isn't the case given the reveal at the end of 2, but who knows?
Personally, I'd be more worried about the generic PC's

Now this, I can totally get behind you on. If you take any of the other characters and put them in silhouette, you can see the time and effort that went into their designs, much less their abilities to make them completely and wholly unique. When I look at this cast, I don't see much of anything that stands out except the Russian looking assassin guy.
Have some faith. Or don't, I actually dont have much faith, I just know Gearbox has one IP they don't lie to you about, this one.
I agree, if there's one game they won't fuck up, it's gonna be this one, I just don't see anything new in this trailer worth getting excited about, and everyone who is ranting about how amazing it is are basically saying this.

I think going for the "I know what that is" factor was the right call. What the majority of the fanbase wants is Borderlands 2 but bigger and with more guns and that's what they showed.
I don't think the trailer is all that good but I don't know what they could have shown that would have made me more excited about the game to be honest. It would have been nice if more time was spent on gameplay instead of showing off returning characters but that's pretty much it.

Also the fact that the trailer literally says "Explore the worlds" seems like a pretty big hint to the game taking place in more than one planet.

Uh, no? You wouldn't lose anything except for the flavor dialogue, which isn't really that insightful to begin with. The game draws a giant diamond where you're supposed to go, how hard could it really make things?

I'll rephrase this, I was fucking with you. I play a lot of Borderlands and people have some pretty random critques sometimes. Sorry.

A lot of story moments that happen in the game are based off of dialogue and character actions preceeding or exceeding dialogue. It would be nice, but it would make programmers have to design coded workarounds to make quest items and events "just happen" and continue forward without picking an item up or going to an area without doing whatever the game wants you to, for example, you always have to trigger dialogue for going into The Dust after honking the horn at the Bloodshot Stronghold, par Scooter's (dialogue driven) requests. Or, when you fight the Bnk3r and Handsome Jack makes the auto cannons get the Buzzards in that boss fight, that would have to just happen, and so would The Bnk3r just have to appear after you fight the auto cannons. Unreal Engine is a doozy to work around with..
It's not that it's impossible, but it would actually make the game play and feel different than it is now, in a weird way. I don't know how to describe it, but it would. And Unreal 3 is already a bitch to work with, Borderlands is well known for being bubblegum tape and glued together with coding. It's a nightmare you can't wish to change.

Kind of agree, but for me the standout is Moze (confirmed name for the trooper-class character).

There's just something about her design I really, really like. It's like if someone put a Road Warrior filter on a marine from Aliens. She really stood out to me in the trailer, moreso than the other three. Also apparently her ult is jumping into that mech for a duration.

I'm not massive big on BL but I put some decent time in.

I tended to play as the Sirens on my first runs through, though going by the trailer that abs lady is one too, so who knows what I'll end up trying.

It's unlikely they're going to fix fundamental problems with Borderlands like how insanely bullet spongey the enemies are, or how every quest is fundamentally the same. (go to x location, kill x number of enemies/boss, come back)
That's kind of quests in a quest-based game in a nutshell, though. There are only so many things you can do with "shoot some shit in the shooting game" without removing the shooting altogether.

There's plenty of ways to add variety to missions beyond just "go here and shoot things and come back". The issue is it requires making the game more complicated in some way.

A good example is one of the best quests in Fallout New Vegas is Arizona Killer where you're tasked to assassinate a character. However just walking up and shooting him is the most boring way to do it. You have several other options like hiding an explosive in a helmet that gets presented to him, reconfiguring the targeting on some automated guns so it shoots down his helicopter etc.

There's ways to redo Borderlands's core gameplay loop to allow for a less repetitive experience like having class specific quests. (In BL2 Zero's ability was to cloak. Imagine if he had a mission where he had to avoid being seen by enemies.) that sort of thing. I mostly would rather the developer restructure the game so the quests where you just shoot enemies and return are the most boring ones.

I hope they bring back the not handsome jack/doppleganger playstyle from pre sequel, the only good thing from that game

I'm actually wondering if ol' Timothy is coming back. Jack's dead, but Timothy still has the guy's face and voice. It's gotta be rough for him. I was mostly thinking of him coming back as a side character, either with some form of surgery to reverse the surgery he already had or just hiding his face and disguising his voice.

Yeah I'm super fucking excited for this. Like holy shit it's been forever since I played 1 but I played everything, and for 2 I replayed it with almost every character to some degree or another. Time to replay both of them but with even more fun!

I cannot stress how much I love this series. I'm a big fan of loot based games like this when it's all inhouse/ingame with no microtransaction bs. I love the skill system from all the games. Oh man this year just gets better and better with gaming, and I hope it releases this year. Going to try out the Siren first, I love the idea of that magic asura punching.

Damn, I was hoping the blonde white dude was going to be August from TftB. Then again, all new characters is probably the best decision. Personally, I actually really liked TftB's story. I hope they kicked Burch to the curb and are hiring a competent script writer.

Took the words right out of my mouth, ily.

I put nearly 400 hours into BL2. Looking forward to wasting another 400 hours of my life on BL3 as well. Until then im exited to try out BL game of the year edition with the updates they are adding to it, since I didn't play the first BL.

As someone who recently played BL1 a lot, you'll miss many quality of life upgrades from BL2 and the world is far blander and emptier. Here's hoping those updates fixed it.

You want an easy time in BL1? Play Siren. Very versatile skill and endgame Lillith is OP as fuck.
Alternatively you could opt for Mordecai, since his Bloodwing skill is the worst out of the OG foursome.
If you do decide on Mordy, focus most of your points on either the Sniper or Gunslinger tree.

Tina's face also looks weird. I guess they made the children ugly so Randy wouldn't want to have sex with them.

This game has to be make or break for Gearbox, right?

This game is not make or break for Gearbox, judging soley for the hype that Borderlands still has (in spite of "The Pre Sequel") and will probably do well enough at launch to justify it's cost to produce. Doubly so if the rumors are true and it becomes an Epic Games Store exclusive - that would mean that they would get a huge paycheck before the game even releases further diminishing their risk.

If BL3 is bad ("Pre Sequel" levels of bad) I think that the next Gearbox game (BL4 or otherwise) is going to be make or break for them. They're on a bad streak and most developers don't get to drop 4 bombs in a row (BL Pre, Battleborn, BL3, 4th title) and it's unclear what talent is at that studio currently that could make something good. If BL3 is bad it will still be catastrophic for them.

I wonder whose money they stole to fund this one.

The persistent rumor is Epic Games' Store will be paying for this one.

https://comicbook.com/2019/04/01/borderlands-3-pc-epic-games-store-steam/ - Apparently some promotional material leaked that had only the EGS logo as well as the alleged release date (Sept 13th). The promo material and the announcement is likely supposed to drop two days from now so we will likely get conformation then.

I don't think BL3 will be good primarily because of how derivative the Borderlands games already are. Between the three "main" games, a lot of the player characters are very similar (2 soldiers, 2 snipers, 2 sirens, multiple characters with an "ally", etc) or very gimmicky. A lot of the trees aren't very well thought out and most of the abilities in the game are passive (each character has two "main" abilities, a melee attach and a single "ultimate" style attack and some characters don't even get a "new" melee). Story wise it's nonsense all over the place and Borderlands (still, judging by the trailer) seems to place a very heavy focus on how cool their characters are and not how cool your character is. They also have a bad habit of including tons of memes that don't age well and memes make up more than 50% of the story and that story is treated super seriously.

I'd love to be wrong and for BL3 to have some really needed changes to the formula but if they don't make any drastic changes I' m not sure how they can compete with games that are a lot more fleshed in similar spaces out that didn't exist when BL2 released seven years ago (Both Division games, Both Destiny Games, Warframe, Farcry 5/New Dawn).

There's some good news regarding active abilities. A leak from a while ago that was confirmed true by the reveal trailer (either that or someone managed to get his hands on the reveal trailer earlier and decided to make up shit about the gameplay) confirms that characters have multiple active abilities this time around, you also see the Siren using what seems to be two different abilities in the trailer.
