Some observant Jews will not pronounce Yahweh (or Jehovah), and use the term "Adonai" instead. In translation, "Yahweh" is to "Adonai" as "God" is to "The Lord". Apparently traditionally it was also forbidden to write out YHWH.

Edit: You mentioned that some observant jews might not and that traditionally it was forbidden to write out yhwh, but I have to wonder how many observant jew still follow that. I'm betting that only the ultra orthodox one do. As most modern ones jews that do practice are (usually) a bit more relaxed about things.
