This analogy is so fucking retarded. A coating of mud does not change the fact that a baseball is still a baseball no matter where you get it from. Just because the MLB has a particular standard doesn't mean that the rest of us plebs aren't using real baseballs. The mud is more analogous to putting on makeup. Going by John's logic, if you rubbed a bowling ball with said mud, it would be legally fit for use in an MLB game.
He's also wrong in that the specific regulation, 4.0.1 (c), only states that the baseballs must be "properly rubbed so that the gloss is removed." In that regard, any suitable substance would suffice, it's just that they've been using this particular mud for so long because it's perfect for the job. So it's not even the mud that makes it legally a baseball.
In short, John is a man.
