Basically, the media chose to use Chelsea van V as their figurehead because she's a dysfunctional person who they could build up from zero. She was unlikely to go out of their control because her only legitimacy came from the favorable narrative the media spun around her.

Chelsea is cunning enough to know that she needs the same kind of leverage over her followers. She picked people like Flynt to assist her because she could give them status and legitimacy they couldn't get anywhere else, so she figured they would march in lockstep with her.

Problem is, Chelsea's not as smart as she thinks. She couldn't keep her followers in line and Flynt went publically bonkers. The mistake made by the media establishment was giving Chelsea a free hand to run her own PR operation. This is probably part of the reason Silverstring Media has been spun up. When the media wants to create a narrative like Chelsea's in the future, it'll be handled by the pros at Silverstring or a similar group, not by the "victim."
