It seems to me that Wu is doing this for attention and fame instead of actually putting in the work of trying to win the campaign by campaigning in the community that he is running in. That's why I think there's an attention seeking aspect to this as well. Other cons would net him more cash but wouldn't get him puff pieces in the NY Times and a national stage to grandstand on.

This is the Ragen Chastain (AKA "Ironfat") gimmick.

If you recall, Ragen is a 400 lb morbidly obese woman who literally cannot ride her specially constructed megabike for over a mile. What she does is set ridiculously stupid goals like finishing an Ironman Triathalon, which is 70.6 miles in total. She takes donations so that the total cost of her attempting to reach her goal is $0, and maybe she even makes a few dollars off of it. Obviously, she doesn't accomplish her goal (She has either failed to show up to, or quit on the first part of the all of the triathalons she's trained for so far.) But because she's so "brave", the fact that she tried is all that matters and she spins the resulting press into more donations, book dates and speaking tours which pay her directly.

Brianna will obviously fail at this endeavor but it will cost her nothing, get her media attention, and unless she does something truly disastrous, she will try to turn it into a career as a "Game developer, Alt-Right defeater and former Senate Candidate" who gives speeches on, you know, whatever trite she currently gives speeches on.

This is the result of a culture that values aspirations over actual accomplishments. It doesn't matter Brianna Wu fails, what matters is that she's a Cool Badass Rebel Feminist Babe Who Tried Her Best!(!!!!)

Like with the patreon, the politician pose gives her the ability to take money without ever having to do any work. It's so much more fun than having to go to an office every day and do menial work, since she's not qualified for any job that involves creative thought.

Cross-posting from the other thread: @stets correctly pointed out that Frank's not really taking any kickbacks. The total expenses, minus the tech toys, add up to precisely what Frank was reimbursed for. So he just paid for almost all the campaign expenses out-of-pocket and got paid back later from the campaign funds.

Frank reminds me of the special teaching aid that the mentally challenged kids had helping them throughout the day in middle school following them around everywhere they go.
