This is what I assume, since John is a psycho that can't feel real feelings and can only pretend to care about what others are saying. The ticks and head bobs and whatnot are just John's way of pantomiming empathy until he gets to talk more, in his head he is like "shut up already so I can talk."

Thank you for finding that SXSW footage! I was looking for it as an example of Wu at her worst for that question. She does everything in her power to monopolize the speaking time for that panel, even cutting off a woman talking about real issues in the Middle East several times just because she couldn't deal with another person (and a real woman at that) getting all of the attention.
Several people have speculated what exactly it is and quite frankly we're not even sure if it's something John does on purpose or not. It could be because of his unhealthy addictions, it could also simply be fidgeting because he hasn't said anything for more than ten seconds.
The bill that had several sex-trafficked survivors advising on it? But fuck them, Johnny knows best and won't allow any legislation of the sort. I'm sure they don't understand the issues anywhere near as much as a seven-foot psychopath in a filthy black minidress. A true politician for women.
Not if the pics I've seen are actually John's mom. It's less apparent than Joel, but he does have some resemblance to his mom especially during his younger, chubby John days. Additionally, when he's not demonizing her, John hints at having a closer relationship with his mom than his dad. In the (admittedly dubious) stories of his childhood, it's his mom that fosters his love of technology. Maybe I am being cynical, but I just can't see any woman being close to her husband's illegitimate love child and giving them the millions of opportunities that Brianna squandered.
