CNN —
The fictional romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) on Netflix’s “Bridgerton” continues to be the talk of TV, but not all of the discussion has pleased viewers.

A recent Forbes piece about the series, penned by author and activist Virgie Tovar, has caused a stir for referring to the pairing as “mixed-weight,” putting focus on the characters’ different body types in a way some have found sexist.

Known by fans as “Polin,” the duo’s romance this season has been eagerly awaited since the show first premiered in 2020, given that fans of the series (and the Julia Quinn novels that inspired the hit Netflix franchise) know that Penelope has secretly yearned to catch Colin’s eye from the beginning.

As celebrated as the pair is, Tovar’s article acknowledges the problematic discussion the characters’ romantic relationship has spurred.

“For some, this romance is unsettling because it forces them to consider that humans are simply not governed by tidy, predictable rules,” Tovar writes. “If this romance upsets you, it says more about how deeply you’ve internalized fatphobia than it says about the bodies of the actors playing Penelope and Colin.”

The article has drawn mixed reaction, with some celebrating the discussion and others decrying terminology used therein.

Writer and critic Zoë Rose Bryant shared on X, “I find it interesting how there are countless fictional couples in film and television where the man weighs more than the woman but people didn’t start writing articles about whatever the f—k a ‘mixed-weight romance’ is until it was the other way around.”

Tovar said to CNN in a statement, “I think this conversation is really important, as difficult as it might be.”

“As someone who’s watched ‘Bridgerton’ from Season 1, I genuinely and instantly saw myself in Penelope. That isn’t an emotion that can be contrived, and I wrote the piece from that place,” she continued. “I think there needs to be room for both the plus-size person who didn’t see themselves reflected in Penelope and those of us who did. Neither of us is wrong. I think it’s important to hear from the people who don’t agree with me.”

Coughlan has said she was aware of the conversations being had about her plus-sized body after the first two seasons and “specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included” in the new season, which features racy sex scenes between her character and Newton’s.

“There’s one scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice,” Coughlan added at the time. It just felt like the biggest ‘f—k you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering.”

Why does "klutzy and quirky" describe every single self-insert character in these kinds of woman-audience stories?
I don't really know people who are into this shit but if I had to hazard a guess just based on pop culture trends, I'd go with Belle from the 1992 Disney cartoon. Formative influence in a lot of their lives, I wager, and a lot of other female characters in kid media seem based around the same prototype.

Meanwhile, the ugly guy/hot wife has been a norm on both tv and movies for decades, and no one seems to care. It’s a shame though, because men need to be held to higher standards with looks.
Because the last 10 years hasn't been increasingly ugly women shoved in lead roles while male actors still look like this:

Seeing a hot muscular guy with a fat woman just seems wrong to most people. I have seen plenty of really skinny men with fat women, and plenty of fat men with fat women, and ordinary looking guys with slightly chubby women. Like tends to sort with like when it comes to attractiveness. Leftists think the only reason the Hugh Jackmans of the world aren't boning 300 pound women is because they haven't watched enough hot guy/fat girl couples on TV. The truth is, people know deep down that being fit and muscular is harder to do and has a higher value than sitting around, and pigging out on food. People also know that fatties tend to die earlier and have more severe health problems. If Hollywood wants to push plus sized girls on the public, there are plenty of plus sized model types who are healthy and well-proportioned, and who exercise regularly, but look just a little bit larger than the size 0 Hollywood ideal. They'd do better getting a size 12 girl with a pretty face than getting some hambeast to be their main heroine. But it's Hollywood and they want DEI Points more than anything, so hambeast it is.

Maybe Hugh Jackman isn't the best example to use here, considering his now ex-wife. However, it has long been speculated that she's just his beard, so maybe that makes sense too,

It's not fat vs not. It's about people who don't take care of themselves vs. people who do. People who take good care of themselves and have been blessed with good genetics tend to have higher standards; they want someone to match them. They don't need to be a perfect 10. But respect that looking their best is generally important and have expectations for themselves in other aspects of their life.

Your looks DO say a lot about you because what you look like does have a lot more to do with choice than many are willing to admit. Of course there's base genetics to work with but keeping up skincare, getting a good haircut, choosing nice clothes that suit you, having a decent diet and exercise regime, keeping yourself and your environment hygienic. It's not something hambeasts are known for. And of course, if you are someone very attractive you tend to have options. You're less likely to settle for someone who doesn't have much going for them unless you're mentally unbalanced and those said options have opted themselves out.

This debacle reminds me of True Detective: Night Country, where the chief fucks her boss(?) Two old people fucking. Being corrupt. How titillating. Sex scenes were a novelty way back when. But now? They're almost gratuitous at this point. Enough already. Just type PornHub in the address bar. There are some groups that we don't want to see fucking.

That show was a FUCKING ABOMINATION and everyone involved needs to NOT work in Hollywood every again.

The only good part was when the raging bitch cop got a beat down from the guy who she assaulted in the fish factory (she also destroyed his truck by dumping sugar in the gas tank)

Two chubs fucking doesn't work because a fat body is like a tuning fork.

Two fat people will resonate at different frequencies, which makes getting a rhythm going kind of challenging.

You need the skinny person because otherwise the motion of the ocean is off.
Brutha eewwww

That said, you're probably correct, two fatties attempting sex is called "blonking" and I'm guessing it's like two beanbag chairs attempting to mate 🤢🤮

This programme tried to portray Queen Charlotte, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, as a nigger. But sure, the thing that has really rustled the jimmies is that Penelope is a fat biffer.
The entire concept of the show is stunt casting for attention and so that the more performatively woke of the potential audience can enjoy their Regency costume drama without performative self flagellation about #RegencySoWhite.
It's drastically likelier for a wealthy Regency bride to be a porker than for the northern German queen to have been a nignog, but no one can complain about the latter, because rayciss. So "hey the fat lassie is fat, did you notice several seasons in THERE'S A FAT LASSIE" is the lightning rod for all the rest of the smug stunt casting.
Everything about this programme is fucking bullshit, even the costume design and set design are not adequate, but stunt casting and performative wokery have been the sole reason for its existence. It will die in the next season now that an acceptable way of criticising it has been found.

Ehh, Nicola didn’t look that bad in the show nude. She obviously has some extra pounds on here but it’s nowhere close to eye-inflaming. I’d probably not shy away from that.

Only seen these pics not the show, she's completely normal looking imo. I'm real surprised some sjw freak like virgie is playing along like this is actual inclusivity for the likes of her and her rhino-looking ilk.

I'm not surprised most everyone here is playing along with the shes huge and an accurate representation of the blight disgusting fat chicks that have befallen out nations one weird trick.

okay and this is worth "celebrating" because like 300 people watch the show?

From what I understand it is quite popular among a certain, almost exclusively female, demographic.

at least there's arguable artistic merit to watching something like Downton Abbey or Mrs Marple. this just looks like fancy goyslop.

Apparently the novels are about as historically accurate to the period as the author could make them. Never read them, but I do remember reading articles praising them for this before Netflix came calling. Then again, she's apparently completely on board with the race swapping, etc. Netflix has done. Whether for social media point or a paycheck, dunno, but here we are. And, of course, despite being named Quinn the author is also a Chosenite.

Julia Quinn is one of the most successful authors in the romance genre, but the show alienated a big chunk of her fans, because outside of the terminally online communiy, her fandom still skew towards white main characters and there are only two genders. I'm not sure whether she anticipated the consequences of taking the money, but she has effectively boxed herself outside of writing more Bridgerton books unless she goes back and redo the dozens of existing novels into the DEI editions. She also can't write romance novels with black characters without getting accused of cultural appropriation by the crowd she courts.

Maybe she's just tired of writing the same old story lines and characters after so many decades and just want the money to retire. Who knows, she could be writing fetish porn under a pen name now to pass her time.

of course, that female demographic consists of women even frumpier and dumpier than the female lead, but women that somehow have strangely high standards that have gotten them into a dead end.

This is so retarded. They simultaneously want people to ignore that the actress is a little chubby, and also make it an "important conversation" about fatphobia or whatever. Why make a big deal out of it?

It helps if you show instead of tell.

“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

Even if I didn't know a thing about her she just straight up projects an ugly aura about her that shows what a miserable cunt she is.

Anyways friendly reminder the biggest policing of women's apperance comes from other women not men.
