A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

My mothers friend fosters, and she only really fosters the absolute headcases that only have 2-3 years left before they are out on their asses. No one wants them, they haven't really got a chance to build a life in the system. She just sort of looks after them, keeps them away from their previous bad associates, and doesn't demand they fuck off immediately after turning 18. I still wouldn't do it, but she was a foster child herself and she sees it as her responsibility, or calling I guess.

The justification (IMO correct) is that it's better to have them in a loving, albeit temporary home, than to keep them in an institutional setting. The unfortunate reality behind it is that the adoption process is so onerous and long-winded - except for specific classes, obviously - that they have to cycle kids through foster homes just to keep them off the streets. It's often the case that they'll age out of the system before they can be adopted. One of the reasons gay adoption was grabbed onto so hard was because widening the candidate pool to include gays promised to alleviate pressure on the system.

I like how they try to skip past the fact that they’re just islamists by mentioning the more attention-grabbing stuff one of them might’ve mentioned once - in between all the islamist ranting - in a video or something.

Two men have been stabbed in a “horrific” knife attack on the Jewish community in Golders Green, north-west London.

In a message posted on social media on Wednesday, Jewish security group Shomrim said a male had been seen running along Golders Green Road “armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public”.

A man 45-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the victims, one in his 70s and another in his 30s, were stabbed, the Metropolitan Police said.

The knifeman was tasered as he attempted to stab police officers, the Met said, adding that officers are “working to establish his nationality and background”.

In a post on X, Jewish charity the Community Security Trust added: “There has been a knife attack today in Golders Green. The suspect has been arrested. We would like to thank @shomrimlondon, @Hatzola and @metpoliceuk for their swift response.

“We are working closely with the police and urge anyone with information to contact the police, Shomrim and CST immediately.”

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has condemned the “appalling attack on two Jewish Londoners in Golders Green”.

“The police have made an arrest and I’d like to thank all the emergency services and heroic volunteers from @Hatzola@shomrimlondon for their swift response to this horrific incident.

“I’m in close contact with the @MetPoliceUK, who will be providing further updates. London’s Jewish community have been the target of a series of shocking antisemitic attacks.

“There must be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society. The Met have stepped up high visibility patrols in the area. I urge anyone who has any information to call police on 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.”

Video posted on social media shows what appears to be someone lying on the road surrounded by emergency workers.

The BBC is reporting that two Jewish men were seriously injured in the attack.

The Standard has contacted the Met Police.

The latest incident follows a string of attacks on the Jewish community in London in recent weeks.

In March, Hatzola was targeted by arsonists who destroyed four of its vehicles parked outside a synagogue in Golders Green.

Sir Keir Starmer was told about the attacks shortly before Prime Minister's Questions

“It's deeply concerning to everyone in this House," he told MPs.

“There is now a police investigation.

“We all need to do everything we can to support that investigation and be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offences, the likes of which we have seen too much recently.”

He was responding to a point or ordered raised by Labour MP Catherine West.

She stressed: “The whole House will be very concerned to hear about the dreadful stabbings this morning in the borough of Barnet.

“As the member for Hornsey and Friern Barnet I'm very worried about this repeated violence against the Jewish community.

“We condemn these alleged attacks and wish the police, the council and all the community services the very best in solving this and bringing to justice those perpetrators of these violence crimes.”

Chris Philp, Shadow Home Secretary, said: “This is yet another appalling antisemitic attack. The Jewish community are not being properly protected from this hate.”

The PM later added on social media: “The antisemitic attack in Golders Green is utterly appalling. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.

“Thank you to Shomrim, Hatzola and the police for acting swiftly. Those responsible will be brought to justice.”

She’s a saint.
And the way kids age out of foster care / care at 18 and just get left to themselves is a scandal. There should be some kind of halfway care. Middle class kids get to go to university and learn how to live independently in a sort of safe environment, and these kids just get labelled as adults and bye bye.

She has one girl that keeps vanishing with random men, and when she took the girls phone off of her, the social worker demanded she give her her phone back. She told the social worker about the men and the social worker was like "Yeah but you can't take her phone away."

We had two very special guests assisting in the special processing. Major Tae is from Korea, and Scott is from the USA. In real life, these are two men I knew who were just as nice as could be but I was certain would do major-league damage should they get properly riled up.

Major Tae and Scott got properly riled up. We should thank Heaven these men are on our side.

If this little fellow were looking down from Heaven, he'd have seen justice truly being done.
