A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Unfortunately after doing it 6 times and getting the knife removed he became DEFRA's issue.

I am unsurprisingly not in favour of banning the bolt but in the context of someone who wanted to stab people because of their religion I found the image funny.
 
Was there a news story circulating about a horrific kosher slaughter house in the main newspapers recently? I just went to search for it and it has completely disappeared. I can only find a few refences to it on facebook but I am sure it was in the Daily Mail.

Was it the one where they were playing wolf noises as the animals died to terrify them or am I thinking of a different one?

I’m out of the loop, but I’d rather not be in it if animal cruelty is going on. What did the doggos do wrong? Anyone who hurts the doggos should have their balls kicked repeatedly. Don’t care what religion they are (balls or people).

Halal meat is cruel as fuck. The process shouldn’t be allowed in the U.K, and no, I don’t give a fuck if it means ‘that’ll drive the practice underground’. We have laws and police for a reason. About time the powers that be decided they should apply to everyone equally, and that certain groups shouldn’t get a pass because we’re supposed to feel sorry for them.

Why is it in any way difficult? Same with this religious court bullshit. It’s not British law. You live here, you’re subject to British law and none of your religious or cultural bullshit matters if it crosses into British legal territory. Allowing different religions or cultures to run their own courts and flout our rules is pure idiocy. Fuck ‘it would look bad to single out Muslims’, apply the law to everyone. Muslims are welcome to go somewhere else where the laws match their beliefs if they don’t like it.

I’d say that these people would think twice if they were in line for being strung up and bled to death, but they’re probably happy to see it happen to someone else. Such is the heartless bastard nature that things like halal encourage. Fuck allowing that in the U.K.

The justification (IMO correct) is that it's better to have them in a loving, albeit temporary home, than to keep them in an institutional setting. The unfortunate reality behind it is that the adoption process is so onerous and long-winded - except for specific classes, obviously - that they have to cycle kids through foster homes just to keep them off the streets. It's often the case that they'll age out of the system before they can be adopted. One of the reasons gay adoption was grabbed onto so hard was because widening the candidate pool to include gays promised to alleviate pressure on the system.

In an ideal world children wouldn't be fostered past babyhood; fostering is essentially a placeholder family until permanent family comes along. In an ideal world there wouldn't even be a need for fostering but it is what it is.

To PL a bit - I'm adopted, was snapped up from my foster family at two weeks old and I thank my goddamn stars I ended up with a family that gave a shit. When I look at horror stories like that baby boy getting raped to death by a pair of degenerates and the kids become criminally jaded by being shuffled around like backdated warehouse stock holy shit I scored the lottery.

Banning the slaughter isn't enough. Banning the importation of Halal meat would have to happen too. Any imported meat should have to be certified as ethically slaughtered. (And ideally, there should be no import of any form of meat that is also being exported, unless it's explicitly seasonal. Britain realistically needs to import meat, but it shouldn't be importing quarter of a million tonnes, while exporting 125k tonnes.)

I’d ban all forms of halal slaughter and meat. All of it. No imports, nothing. If I cant have my incandescent lightbulbs you can’t have your tortured meat. If it was up to me all meat/egg etc would be to the very highest standards. Zero battery cages. No stall and tether. No veal. I eat meat, but I want it to be well famed and killed and for the conditions it lived in to be as good as it can. Expensive? Don’t care. No one should be eating cheap pink meat paste
Also ban non medical circumcision, and actually start prosecuting people for both male and female genital mutilation - we have anti FGM laws on the books and vanishingly few people have been prosecuted for it.
Those two things alone would make things a lot better

What about foie gras ?
It's delicious and I have happy memories of watching the geese flock to the farmer at feeding time. This was "forced feeding" ? I would watch them run across the field and fight to be first to have the tube.
I never got to try Ortolan ( so good you have to cover your head so God can't see you enjoying their deliciousness ) or is it because of how they are prepared ? Yikes.

The fragile songbird from France, which weighs less than an ounce and is about the size of your thumb, was served exclusively to royalty and rich gourmands until it became illegal in 1999. The procedure for preparing ortolan has long been controversial. They are kept in darkness for weeks or are blinded, which causes the bird to gorge on grains and grapes and become fat, the key ingredient to its decadence when cooked. The birds are then thrown alive into a vat of Armagnac brandy (which both drowns and marinades them), then roasted. Ortolans are meant to be eaten feet-first and whole, except for the beak, according to the Times.

French are one down from the Chinese - anything that has four legs and isn't a table is on the menu.

That’s not how most of it is made. If they can get the geese to do it freely then fine. Most is factory produced, and involves considerable suffering.

That should be banned too. Meat shouldn’t suffer. Animals should have a decent life and then be killed before they know what’s going on. I’m not squeamish about slaughter, I’ve worked on farms and seen sheep killed with a knife to the throat swiftly and humanely when they were badly injured and couldn’t be brought closer to base. Meat requires killing, and that’s that. But not cruelty.
