Call of Duty Thread - Potential return to form? Or nothing but cope on the horizon? You decide!

This isn't fair IMO, Treyarch got fucked over by Activision for both Black Ops 4 and Cold War.
In my unpopular opinion, I never found Treyarch to be good, although I'll admit I never played World at War. Black Ops 1's plot broadcasted its own ending to any non-retard from a mile away, and the ending was just flat and cheesy, like a Bond villain death without any real epilogue.

It was also the first of the games that - to me - really showed it was holding you back with kiddie gloves in case you fell over and accidentally shot yourself in the head: Every vehicle section was absolutely on-rails and allowed no deviation from where they intended for you to go. The mission start where you follow behind Woods and can't get around his slow ass because invisible walls, the binoculars you bring up that you have no control over, etc. It was stifling and annoying, and really stood out in contrast to the games made before it.

For the small amount of Black Ops 2 I did try it seemed like an improvement, but by then I was thoroughly finished with CoD and seeing praise directed at the patterns of CoD games where [cool thing happens but is only there for one level so is not a legitimate gameplay addition] burned me out, on top of annual releases and reused assets.

[EDIT]: Sorry, I forgot Mason was the player. All their boring names just blend together nowadays.

This sounds like an issue with Call of Duty more than Treyarch itself, which is fair I guess.

Always trust in Infinity Ward. Treyarch are washed up and Sledgehammer should go back to support studio.
I've been trying to keep my spergery about Treyarch to a minimum when it comes to this thread but I absolutely fucking hate them now. Black Ops 2 used to be my favorite CoD game, it still holds up really well today too. But after Black Ops 4 and BOCW, Treyarch has proven that they're literal fucking retards when it comes to CoD, while IW has done a complete 180 and shown that they can learn from their mistakes since they went from Infinite Warfare, a game with a very decisive multiplayer, to Modern Warfare 2019 which was a true return to from for CoD.

I personally think that Vangaurd is not as bad as BOCW, because BOCW was just straight up shit when it came to the Multiplayer, especially during the beta/alphas, while Vangaurd is just fucking boring.

Some things like the set pieces are a universal CoD problem, but I got the impression that prior to BO1 you were allowed to fuck up. You could shoot at Makarov and be killed for it, you could accidentally blow your stealth cover or shoot hostages, etc. BO1 felt like they tried their hardest to make sure you couldn't do that, like putting you in a car that had you only press one button (accelerate). No reverse, no steering, - it's like having Mario jump for the flagpole at the end, but the flag's only a foot off the ground.

They also couldn't tell a story with any subtlety - "oh look, Reznov disappeared, re-appears when no-one else is watching, Mason is acting like a nut....do you GET IT YET? DO YOU GET IT??? Don't worry, we'll show it to you another 5 times in case you didn't."

I had no issue with their gameplay outside of campaign though. I remember it being distinct and a little weighty, but it wasn't horrendous.

Changed the thread name and sub title to reflect the atmosphere, never thought this thread would take off again after Vanguard.
I will say that I am once again sort of excited for a Call Of Duty game after two mediocre titles.

Nice to see Infinity Ward back in the driver’s seat again. Heck, I enjoyed Infinite Warfare, and felt that MW 2019, while not perfect, still made attempts to move the series forward. So at the very least, I’ve got more faith in them.

Some information that in the grand scheme of things doesn't really matter but I find pretty interesting for MWII.
Most of this info comes from this video by PrestigeIsKey, who got a presentation from Infinity Ward about the game. This post also contains a whole lot of speculation from me so just take that into consideration.

Modern Warfare II will have a bigger "focus" on weapon manufacturers which also seems to tie into the weird weapon customization system that we'll probably get more info on in the future. It's also probably a way to not get fucked up the ass by copyright but a bunch of guns seem to be getting renamed. The H&K equivelent of MW's world seems to be Lochmann & Meer, so there's a fuck ton of attachments and guns named after them and the already established XRK. One of the main examples in Prestige's video of guns being renamed is the MP5, which seems to be the Loch-5 now (a shit name not gonna lie). So don't be surprised the the M4 is renamed to the XR-15 or something similar. The only worry that I have about this is attachments sounding very similar, which can make copying attachment loadouts a little more confusing, especially with the attachment tweaking system that seems to be coming along with Gunsmith 2.0.

To explain why I’m suddenly not dreading this game is watch the campaign reveal. The weapon sound alone makes me feel they somewhat CARED about this. Vanguard the guns are peashooters and the animations? Don’t get me started how does the Kar98 look and sound better in MW2019 than in an actual WW2 game on the same engine.

SHG needs to be shut down, and 3arc needs to be bitchslapped back into building semi-clone games on IW's engine. In the case of SHG, they've shown that even when you twist their arms and force them to do something that people want, they will find a way to shit all over it.

This isn't fair IMO, Treyarch got fucked over by Activision for both Black Ops 4 and Cold War.

No, they fucked themselves over. 3arc can't get things done on time and keeps coming up with "wacky" and "zany" ideas for innovation that don't sit well with the fans.

Some of this is rumor, some of it obvious. 3arc's internal culture has been getting progressively woke, and some of the people that make WaW and BO1 truly excellent games left during or after BO2. Some for greener pastures, and some for places where dangerhaired communists aren't up their asshole all the time.

Another glaring issue 3arc had that was obvious to anyone with experience in the software industry is that they were having trouble scaling up their processes to handle bigger projects and teams. All of their PS3/360 era releases had pretty serious QA/QC issues and required a lot of help from Raven to get them into a releasable state. The wheels started coming off when the PS4/XB1 era hit. Black Ops III managed to sell pretty well, but it was also a giant mess in a lot of other ways. They completely screwed up BO4. CW was also a total clown show, both because SHG was ruining it and because 3arc isn't that competent. All that's on them; Papa Acti didn't screw that up.

From what I heard, the big firearms manufacturers got greedy and demanded a much bigger royalty cut than Acti is willing to pay, so now they're getting nothing.

Nah, Activision definitely had a hand. Let's not forget that Black Ops 4 was being designed around co-op before Activision came in and had them scrap it all for pure multiplayer, only to then come in at the last minute and have them rush a Battle Royale mode in to get in on the craze.

And honestly, for the mess that Cold War was at launch it's amazing it came out as decent as it did considering Treyarch was pulled in at the last possible minute once again to completely rework the game since Sledgehammer was apparently completely fucking it up. During the height of the Covid Pandemic no less.

Yeah, they make weird decisions like having the weird hero style for Black Ops 4 (although people complain if it's just like the last game as well so they're damned either way it seems) but let's not act like Activision doesn't deal them shitty hands every step of the way now.

3arc's co-op idea is what I was talking about. It was a ridiculous, fantastically complicated idea that had close to zero chance of getting finished on time, working correctly, or not angering the customers. Their original dev version of the multiplayer was basically an Overwatch clone, and it quickly became apparent during testing that it was going to really piss off fans. That's why Acti had to step in and nuke it. Blackout was fairly popular and made quite a bit of money, but that was actually Raven, not 3arc. Acti had Raven build on this success, and Warzone was even more successful. Also, after seeing how badly 3arc and SHG were fucking up their IP, they basically gave people who walked out after MW2 a blank check to do what they wanted, and MW 2019 was a mega-hit. So they mostly made the right calls.

In other words, Acti stepped in and twisted 3arc's arm because they were full of stupid ideas that were a mix of impossible to complete on time and brand-ruining.

CW wasn't as bad as it was because Acti brought the hammer down and told them to more or less make it like MW 2019.

"Well, we doubled our sales and made a billion dollars, but did you see the literally dozens of people complaining on reddit???" said no CEO at any shareholder meeting, ever.

It isn't like Modern Warfare 2019 at all. That was one of the biggest complaints about it because it felt like a step back graphically and gameplay wise, and tonally clashed with Warzone when Activision forced integration.

I never thought I'd see someone actually praising Activision as doing good things for Call of Duty. What a world.

I don't even know how to parse this statement when things like gunsmith and Warzone were ctrl-c ctrl-v'd directly over (rather than iterating on Blackout), not to mention the return to a military-inspired theme after the cartoon sci-fi direction got the axe. I guess 3arc was a lot more retarded than IW about gunsmith, what with its "STANAG revolver cylinder," but taking something from MW 2019 and making it dumber doesn't count as being completely different.

Call of Duty doesn't even exist without Activision. It's only ever existed as a creation of an Activision subsidiary, so obviously, there have been a lot of good decisions.

Some more Call of Duty info, this time dealing with Warzone.

Warzone is getting a new map called "Fortune's Keep" which will reportedly be replacing Rebirth Island. It's also rumored from leaker accounts that the map is going to come with either a new event or season. Link to the CoD Twitter announcement. According to @CodWarfareF0rum on Twitter, the map also seems to be coming with a new mode called Gold War and a return of the zombies mode from the Haunting of Verdansk event.

Warzone Mobile gameplay has been leaked by Twitter user DessierrorLeaks, here's a link to the video. Video will also be included with the post too. He also leaked the APK apparently, here's a Google Drive link for it, of course download at your own risk.

This footage looks pretty legit to me. It shares a lot of similarities with the current CoD Mobile BR mode, but it just seems to be more of a direct port of Warzone/MW. Note the different M4 model too, possibly from MWII?

If any more info comes out worth covering I'll update the post with it.

EDIT
More information on CoD Warzone/MW mobile.

From reading more of Dessierror's Twitter posts, the game seems to be a version of MW/MWII for mobile that'll be released sometime late in 2022 or early 2023.

More footage, featuring random people speaking spanish.

Some screenshots of the main menu and UI. The UI is very similar to CoD Mobile.

I liked Cold War and the Outbreak mode for Zombies.
The only redeeming factor of BOCW was the Zombies, Outbreak when it was first released was fun but quickly lost replay value until the grand quests were added. Even then, Treyarch fucked up right after that with Vanguard's terrible zombies mode. Yes, Treyarch made the zombies for Vanguard, not Sledgehammer.

IIRC the original Modern Warfare 3 was supposed to be a prequel about Ghost, but Activision told them to finish up the story which is why each game is all kinds of fucked up story wise.
They should've had Ghosts be that concept. Maybe keep the America underdog plot but have it with Ghost's... parents?
