One major difference between 2005 and 2025 that I rarely see mentioned is that kids don't get jobs anymore because they're all taken by Jeets. I worked in a movie theatre for $6.45 an hour and that was OK because I was 14. These are fundamentally transient jobs that literal children used to do; they were never meant to support a family full time.
But Tim Horton's and their ilk wants to squeeze every dollar out of both their employees and their customers, and it turns out Purjinderpat doesn't have to ask Mom permission to work a double shift and has zero plans of going back to school in the fall, and the manager making $36,000 a year already speaks Hindi, so it's easier for them to rely on TFWs.
