First clip I've seen of Trump responding to the Canadian results. He's very pleased Carney got in and says Carney has already called and sucked up talked to him. The Canadians are to blame for voting so foolishly, but I'm not a fan of Trump rubbing it in the face of Canadian conservatives.

If Alberta votes to secede from Canada then I hope the US absorbs them as a territory for a few years and then they can eventually apply for statehood.

They literally were going to repeal the gun bans, the restricted firearm transfer freeze for pistols, revise the firearm laws so they aren't arbitrary, and cut down on immigration. Just because it wasn't spoken loudly every two seconds doesn't mean it wasn't there as part of the platform. Just before the election they were sperging out because Pierre said that mass murderers would get life in prison.

Bad news for you, then. It turns out you import more oil from Alberta than Mexico, Saudi Israelia and Iraq combined. In fact; U.S. oil infrastructure, particularly in the Midwest and Gulf Coast, is extensively configured to handle Alberta’s heavy, sour crude oil. So, you're probably going to end up with a new territory eventually.

Immediately after the election the Premier of Alberta coincidentally dropped an announcement for bunch of new revisions to provincial election laws, including a drastic loosening of the petition requirements needed for a referendum. She hasn't given any hints on what a referendum could theoretically ask, but it just so happens that a few different intent-to-vote initiatives for a separation referendum have exploded in traffic since then.

If it's going to be done right it'll be a long process with a lot of what-ifs to clear, though. The intent entries are easily going to meet the theoretical threshold for a formal petition, but there needs to be a sufficient level of popular support over and above that before initiating an actual referendum will be viable. That's going to involve a lot of political organization that doesn't exist yet, and even after it passes it would lead to some very complicated summit meetings with the federal government that could easy go wrong. But there's already a substantial bedrock of interest for separation without any proper political structure to support it and if Carney lives up to his platform it's only going to make the status quo of federalism more acutely uncomfortable for people in their day to day lives.
