Exactly, it's been a Canadian native slur for a long while now, since at least the mid 90s. We don't need to astroturf what already exists in practice.

I just assumed it was either made up or last used in the 1800s considering where we are. I also assumed it had something to do Chaga not alcohol.
It's more insulting than snowback thats for sure.

I'm reasonably sure it's been around since the 70s and 80s. Skeegun is another one that gets tossed around, but it might be more of a Maritimes thing.

What most likely will happen in the immediate future is the land goes from a freehold to a leasehold. A leasehold in this case would be the occupant of the home would sign a lease agreement to be on the land for X number of years. After which you re-sign the lease. As well as paying property tax to most likely the band council. So it's a huge money maker and why the band is trying to get the land.

NOW, after the lease term, they can force you to sell your home back to the band for "fair market value." If they decide not to let you re-sign. As you do not have the rights to live on the land anymore. What this means is that now every single business in this area is gone. Depending on how this shakes out, no one is going to have a business where it can be claimed by the 'state' at the stroke of a pen. Or subject to constant leasing of the land with possible extremely one sided terms. So this area of Richmond is done. Even if it does get overturned, which all levels of government are attempting to do.

A judge suddenly deciding that land no longer belongs to you, but to someone who claims their grandfather fished there back in 1975 is disastrous to any kind of stability for the area. Both societally and economic. Why would people allow themselves to be subject to the whims of an unaccountable ethnic junta. Which is notorious for corruption?(Yes I know this Canada and we already deal with this)

This patch of land is done for, there will be no building, there will be no form of economic development. This judge has created an instant ghetto where only the most desperate will live.

If we play our cards right, people get sick of all the indian reserves and the government starts curtailing their rights because there's not much the natives can do about it.

I'm starting to believe about 90% of society's problems are caused by judicial decisions. What goes on in the heads of judges and lawyers? Canada, USA, the UK would probably be spacefaring civilizations if it wasn't for them.
