I mean I kind of get it. Going through all those fighting games recently the ones with a basic story mode and unlockables did seem more appealing to me than the ones with just basic arcade modes for the most part. Some of the basic arcade style ones though were fun enough it didn't matter. The only reason I kept playing Marvel Vs Capcom 2 despite kind of hating it was because it had unlockable characters and I kept grinding at Soul Caliber 3's story mode even though the last 3 fights are all kind of unfun bullshit just for all the extra shit. I probably wouldn't have bothered playing it as much if it didn't have all the extra shit. I barely bothered with the PSP Soul Caliber because it lacked all the extra shit from the third one.So am I because I can only stand so many Metroidvanias. The problem is that people need blatant padding bullshit to feel like their purchase was justified, as if they don't piss away far more money on other banal shit.
When it comes down to it though I'll pick a solid game without extra bullshit over a meh one with extra bullshit.
I don't think the issue is just people needing blatant padding though. I know, at least me personally, I'm wary of a lot of games like that made in modern times because of how many of them are fairly mediocre and shitty. The problem with those kinds of games is that people think they're simple and easy to make so a lot of talentless people try and slap one together and sell it. The thing about good basic platformers is that they're made by talented people who put as much effort into making it as they would a less basic game. It's easy to make a shitty or lackluster platformer. It's hard to make a good one. It's one thing when you're a kid and you don't have a choice or know any better when you're stuck playing Predator on the nes or Dracula on the Genesis it's another thing as an adult. I'm not going to waste my time on shit like that.
And I feel like there are far less platformers in current year with the quality of shit like Shovel Knight or the Messenger or even that Sonic Mania game than there are ones that are lackluster at best just because there's less talented people focusing on making games like that. When I found Super Cyborg, a pretty great modern contra clone which I'd recommend if you like run and guns, I found a couple other modern run and gun games I downloaded at the same time. The other ones were surprisingly awful. Like really bad. Like avgn ljn nes game review bad. Just extremely low effort awful games but I never would have known that before trying them all. Buying those older retro style games just feels like a game of Russian roulette.
