with the conversations i've had with artists, it seems like they're fine with ai (or ai assisted) tools as long as they're:
- complicated to use
- produce an inferior output unless you have the "proper" skills
- gatekeep "normal" people from using them (see #1 and #2, basically)

as long as the tools enhance their art and give them a leg up they're fine with it. they don't hate ai tools, they hate that the tools have become so advanced and easy to use that the wrong people can produce art that approaches their years of time sunk into learning art (or, let's be real, produce art that is better than what they do). they never thought they would be replaceable from technological advancements because they're aRtiStS

What people online in spaces like "animation Twitter" etc. REALLY mean when they bitch about AI voices, they aren't mad that someone like the creator of that short "stole" the original voice, what they are really mad about is that he didn't pay for one of the billion shitty meme VAs on twitter to do a shit imitation of the original. AI voices should be used especially in place of talentless people who post shitty 30-second low-effort videos of them voicing a shitty meme or someone who just posts crap like a video of them badly imitating Solid Snake or whoever to say "SOLID SNAKE SUPPORTS TRANS RIGHTS" for clout and thinks that makes them an "actor", but usually start floundering when they have to do a voiceover that lasts longer than a minute and requires maybe actual acting..

Of course, he caved in instead of telling the VAs complaining about him where to get off. Of course, the people who were slamming him just hours ago in some cases are acting like this is a victory.

There's no way any animator in his position could have won.

I still have some sympathy for him, I admit - being attacked like he was and suddenly having actual big names, corrupt as they are, must be terrifying if you're not used to any sort of attention like that so I can see why he'd want to defuse or try to keep his name clean.

I recall Peter Cullen lost the Eeyore role, while mildly bitter about it he did not go nuts. The closest we got was him voicing Optimus to commiserate with the sad donkey. Targeting the new voice actor would never have occurred to me mostly because it's not their fault but largely because I know it is the studio being arseholes

Don't forget the time Cullen voiced Mario in the Saturday morning adaptation of Donkey Kong. And I agree, I would not mind anyone doing either Daphnie or Velma if they're not basic bitches.

Fictional characters like Bugs Bunny, Batman, Spiderman, Scooby-Doo, Garfield, Kermit the Frog and Mario have been known for having more than one voice actor. Are they going to be as good as the original cast? No, not really, but they still have to commit to it. The worst case scenario is if we have a wrong sounding version of Optimus Prime or Eeyore. It'll just be as bad as wrong-sounding Muppets.
