Castlevania Thread - Vampires, Whips, and Horror's Greatest Hits Now In One Gaming Franchise

So the only way out is through:

“That’s right vamp boy. This here whip is endowed with special white magical whatnots. It’s something of a family heirloom.”

So back to the games, I heard another person in the thread mention that they heard rumors of the literal antichrist being the new villain if the series continued past Order of Ecclesia? If done correctly that could have been both awesome and quite fucking based if you target a lot of the globohomo shit as the antagonistic force.

cannot believe how much they wasted the French Revolution setting
This floored me too because it is a genuinely great idea. A time of great societal upheaval, violence, villains on both sides with true evil seeping in to take advantage. Richter enters the picture as a man caught between both sides of the revolution with the goal of hunting the monsters that killed his mother, forced to choose sides in a conflict both bigger than himself but also more ancient and evil than the revolutionaries or the nobles could possibly know.

Instead the show has, like, two scenes where a guy gets guillotined and then the protagonists run back and forth to an abbey in a countryside villa only to get their asses kicked, disappear, then reappear again to repeat until the show comes to an unceremonious and anticlimactic end.

It's because the idea wasn't done because it was a good idea, it was just an excuse to bloviate about how evil the white man's church is.

An idea is only good if the reasons for its existence are good, else it will not be used properly.

Just here to say Lords of Shadow was underrated (not the sequel, just the first game). It had a number of nitpick problems and absolutely stole borrowed numerous elements from other popular games at the time, but it blended them well enough to work as a fun little game. What took it a step from "just good" to "Great" in my opinion was the excellent music, voice acting, and plot. Robert Carlisle and Patrick Stewart edify each moment they speak in, and the narration by Stewart perfectly sets the mood (a quality bestiary and "hidden note hunt" helps too). The musical quality goes without saying in my opinion...
I love the way the game depicts the villains and even Satan himself, having them use more delicate language and acknowledging that God and Angels exist. Lords such as the Lycanthrope still refer to their heavenly counterparts as "beloved brothers", and Lucifer tries to persuade Gabriel to his side by saying he will "Love him more than God". It's such a more believable take on demons/fallen angels. It makes more sense to put on a beautiful front to try and seduce people with lies and soft words than to look like Cthulhu.

I always assumed that Hell did exist in the Iga timelime in the form of The Abyss which is apparently seperate from Chaos as established in Dawn of Sorrow.

Wow the xitter for netflixvania is completely dead, aside from a tweet from a couple weeks ago there's been no activity since mid october :story: Did they kick out the account manager after they had to delete that tweet?

It's like, and this is my assumed theory/rumor so please correct me if I am wrong, someone over at PR knew about how much shit Netflix Castlevania had truly become

No, the problem is autistic, degenerate coomers.

Wait, you haven't seen this exact post from me before, it's slightly different! Allow me to elaborate why this applies here.

See, a feature of autistic, degenerate coomers is that their attention span only holds on a given game or show so long as it's in vogue, which translates into coomer fan content to get those upboots.

That means that most games or IPs have limited staying power, because the coomers move on to the next waifu or husbando to whack off to. It's no different from how to weather a given Twitter boycott you just have to hold for a few weeks.

This has the side effect of various IPs trying to chase that dedicated Undertale type coomer fanbase, thus degenerating the IPs in the process in terms of gameplay, character writing, and so on.

Coomers are, literally, ruining games.

I can go blow by blow later of how I felt bout everything but I actually enjoyed the season.

The black chick was completely forced but not terrible in a character sense. It wasn't as good as season 1 and 4 but I liked it more then 2 and 3.

Genuinely hope it gets another season.

I love that this thread exists, but the rape of the series by Netflix killed my enthusiasm for the series a while. It’s not canon, so there’s that, but it’s still the only new entry into the franchise we’re getting.

I hate that they get abuse the name, while a current canon game doesn’t exist to override the bullshit. Netflix needs to just can that skid row abomination and be done with it.

I'm still pissed that we didn't at least get that battle of 1999 game with Julius.

Not surprised

The issues people bring up about Nocturne do exist, but I feel like they are blown out of proportion. Here's a rundown of everything I liked and hated from watching the show. Personally I felt the pros outweighed the cons, but some people are more forgiving then others

First off, I love the animation, the fights are all pretty great and the music is good. The shows style kept things brisk and I was never bored even at it's worst.

The characters all feel like characters as opposed to political talking points which was nice. Maria was the most annoying occasionally because every now and then got on her high horse about liberty and the revolution but It wasnt unbearably bad. The most eye rolling parts are the flashbacks and reverence given to Haiti as being a bastion of freedom and magic. Which is hilarious. As Haiti historically has been a bastion of devil worshipers, slavery, and as trump would say a shithole. So it is a little insulting that the magic from that land is presented as a good thing. But I can roll with it even if it takes the better part of an episode or so to get over with.

The worst moment narratively besides the magical black people moments was when Richter loses his shit seeing the vampire who killed his mom, while Annette keeps her cool and manages to kill the vamp that gutted hers. Props though for using crosses to kill him in a creative way and that they were treated as holy symbols that actually burned him. which was nice.

So when the magical black people show up, it is pretty random, but ill give em credit. They are fleshed out characters with their own backstorys. And they dont take over the plot and demean everybody else. They functioned more as members of the fellowship and I appreciated that. Annette gives Richter some shit for not having magic and running away one time but it does not last long and she is for the most part her own character.

The language issue could have been better, I understood what they were going for but I dont know if wanker is a phrase young girls casually fling around, Felt a lot less natural then the last series.

Richter was mostly good. Dug how they presented him and he had some good fights. He needs to have just a bit more screen time though. They dont set him up with Annette too much, they only have one scene that even hints at romance.... but you and I both know they'll probably hook up and I admit Im not looking forward to that. I like how there was an actual moment were Richter was Like "ladys, we cant go into the place blow shit up and be girl bosses, we need a plan and we need Think before we start blasting" and they agree with him. Which was nice.

This scene was undenably cringe and a massive misstep. It's the only one I thought was unforgivablely terrible. Honestly it could have worked if he just immediately vaporized that sucker and THEN quipped but yeah.

There was some other black guy who gets turned into a demon but manages to keep his soul. Dudes singing may set off some cringe alarms, but im a sucker for people wailing their lungs out as long as there's heart put into it. So that was fun. (I like country music, so that's probably why I did not immediately laugh.)

There is a gay scene between a Templar warrior and an Aztek vampire.... You know what? it was presented and written as good as it was gonna get. I cant say I approved but I appreciated how the templar guy still believed in and defended god after banging this guy. The whole nature of the scene's conversation is the two of them talking about sin and serving lesser evils. It actually showed character motivation as opposed to being pointless. Props. The gay templar guy actually has payoff to his arc so that was cool too. Dude knows he's a sinner but still loves and serves god, and It's hard for me to get mad at that. Aztek guy has the drip and is a cool character playing everybody against one another. That being said, I will be pissed if he gets off scot free in the next season.

Also the church is aligned with the bad guys but the actual reasoning for it was novel. As the french revolution escalates in the killings and beheadings they see the writing on the wall and desperately align with the vampires to reset things to the way they were and take out the revolutionary's. In hindsight seeing current events it actually seems precedent and interesting. It's a temporary alliance that they hope to come out on top of, but the way it was done was really interesting.

I really loved the priest character Emmanel. Hands down my favorite character to watch. He was really interesting and had a magnificent voice.( Richard Dormer) A man who genuinely believes he's doing the right thing and has the best of intentions but assumes getting in bed with the devil will somehow serve god. There's a wonderful tragedy here and his scenes are some of the best in the entire show.

Tera was cool. Had one of the best arcs and payoffs to her character and was the best chick.

Villains are all pretty kickass in all honesty. They were probably the strongest element of the show besides Emmanel. They had good setup and banter. The only problem is they kinda wrote themselves into a corner with most of them dead at the end aside from the head vampire queen. So either she's going to get a new batch of flunkies or Dracula is going to come out of retirement in the next season.

I think the main problem with this show is that while im able to accept and handwave things due to my knowledge of basic history, they are speed running a kitbash of the revolution with vampires in such a way that nobody is really going to properly understand just how horrific that period in time was. It's just set dressing. That and some jank story moments here and there. But its a decent package and they did not screw things up that badly.

The biggest plot hole is why the vampires even need the night creatures when they can just block out the sun. I mean I can understand why for a lot of things logistically, but surely its not going to break the bank when they control literally EVERYTHING and can fly! My headcanon was they just did not want more mouths to feed when it came to increasing their army.

The next season has a lot of potental to be good or shit depending on how they handled the fan reactions. Im curious to see if they double down or pull back a bit, but I would like to see what they do.
