Cancel campaigns seem to work by hyping up some narrative enough to kill the victim before anyone realizes there's nothing there or everyone gets bored and moves on. DDoS helps prevent Streisand effect and helps with the bandwagon -- people see it is down, and assume it deserved it, making it easier to keep the cancel ball rolling since you can get away with more lies. It also discourages and demoralizes, exaggerates their power (crucial), disrupts enemy communication/coordination, and creates a drain on Null's time/attention. So much of fighting this is just not going down and not giving up.I can't tell if the DDOS is an act of desperation or meant to be a killing blow of some sort. Either way, it's obviously less serious than Tier 1 sites blackholing the site, so I'm going with desperate. That implies they've used up their last logical step in escalation and can't go any higher.
They also think it costs us active users because every hour it's down X people get bored and never come back supposedly. I'm less convinced of that, and think the analysis depends on there being many other similar sites as competition. I don't think anyone else is selling quite what Null is selling these days unfortunately.
There are a lot of rich troons, especially in tech. Why not throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, you only need so many pair of programmer socks.
I think there's more going on this time than a typical cancel culture campaign (at a minimum, back channeling and coordination), but it's still a big part of it. Whatever happens, it's nice to see Null going down fighting and making them destroy the internet piece by piece to get him instead of another sickening apology + fold. I am so very, very tired of the culture war
