One one hand, they achieved only middling BD sales even after accounting for the bundle purchased directly from their site. Given the budget I'd be surprised if they even broke even. On the other hand, MAPPA is a studio with a reputation for putting out a product with high production value. If it's not feasible to make Season 2 at the same production values of Season 1 then I suspect they'll opt not to do a Season 2, leaving it to be picked up by a different studio with a more limited budget.

From what I read, factoring in the direct purchase from MAPPA's website the BD sales were likely much higher(10k-15k) than the ~1400 figure produced by whatever tracking service was used to generate that number. Still on the low side but not the outright catastrophe that was initially believed.

People like porn and anime DVD blue rays tends to be insanely pricey, both here and in Japan.

So it’s not really a surprise. Plus, most people just torrent or something.
 
The anime was just boring with the only noticable thing being the start. No cool fights, not expanding the jokes, it was depressingly by the number for a series that deserved something a lot crazier.

Yeah, the main problem with the anime is that its all setup. We're just being introduced to the world and this was a time when Denji was still learning about his powers and avoided transforming due to the transformation being painful. All the really good stuff doesn't happen till later in the story. Even so, it was good enough as a start, and there were some legitimately cool moments.
 
poor Denji. that 20 something year old pretending to be a high school student is clearly not putting out and treats him like shit like all the others. now time to score some cult bitches.

This chapter has me wondering if Fujimoto is reaching his patented "Fuck everything" moment that he seems to hit in everything he writes where he just chucks everything out the window and chucks a gigantic curve ball, because 3 chapters ago I was definitely not expecting "Denji and why cults are no good" to be a thing.

Honestly it's pretty appropriate that the way Denji gets character development is by dealing with people even more batshit insane than him. This entire chapter brings to mind the old joke about the two criminals escaping from an asylum and the one telling the other to cross over the gap on his flashlight beam, only for the other to counter that he'd just turn it off halfway through.

Once again, a moment of real happiness for Denji is taken away from him. Not unexpected, of course, save for where said happiness comes from.

Really good chapter this week, really looking forward to seeing what happens.

Also, I guess that technically makes three girls that are actually into Denji.
