I don't know how it is in america, but here in spain Philosophy is a mandatory subject in the last 2 years of highschool. And like with most of these subjects, most kids just learn to repeat verbatim the test matter and then ignore any actual lessons they could've learned.

I just... I hate how that goes. Personally that was one of my fabourite matters. Nietzche and Ortega specially. And then I realized what my classmates had learned at it was depressing.

My point is, there's no point in trying to teach this shit that way. The ones that care will learn but this shit proves the ones that don't wont. Only way to teach real values is to drop the book, grab a knife and a rucksack, and go on a 7 hour march through the plains of castille to a camp on top of a mountain. That's how you learn about cooperation, rationing supplies and the importance of social structure. At least that's how I learned anyway.

I think you can learn philosophy other ways than forced marches, but definitely multiple choice standardized testing is a great way to remove all learning from schooling. I'm often astonished at the ignorance people have of incredibly basic things.

I can live with them being ignorant of history, higher mathematics, and the sciences. What really worries me is when someone will not understand why you need to turn the couch to get it out the door, or fail to understand why their potted plants need to move to bigger pots as they grow.

I have to imagine that, confronted with a pegboard toy, they would first bash the square peg at the round hole until they cracked the board, cry, and then call the square peg a nazi.
