Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

Chris can count to "potato".

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

If Chris was on the honor roll, he must have been moderately competent at whatever math course he took. It is not super uncommon for teachers to pass people through to avoid hassle, but that is often C's and D's. He must have done ok in some class.

special ed classes... he slept during those classes...

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

Achievements? The only thin he achieved was getting his teachers to pass him. And even then it's possible that was all Bob's doing.

They don't have a lot of homework or tests; just show up to class and you pass it. Chris could do that.
You could say it'd be so easy...

He could do it in his sleep. AUGH YEAH

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

The thing to keep in mind is in most cases, if you're getting As and Bs in remedial courses, you're still considered honor roll. Similarly, it's really not hard to get As and Bs in a (public) high school - as long as you don't disrupt the class, sit quietly, and pay attention you're bound to get a B.

With Chris's claim of Bob's "negotiation" during high school, I wonder if he "negotiated" Chris's grades or his honor roll status. It's entirely possible Chris was indeed an honor roll student, like I said it's not hard to do if you're taking remedial classes and you're not outright disruptive, but I wonder if Bob might have taken a role with his grades as well. (Disclaimer - this is just something I'm curious about, just because I'm saying this doesn't necessarily make it true).

Just a little something special for our someone special. :tomgirl:

I only hope it makes up for getting none of the awards for his great math and art talent when he graduated.

But the thing I am really curious about is why Chris thinks he's good at math. Is it that, in his mind, good grades = "I'm smart", regardless of what level course he is taking?

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

If I was doing crap in maths my parents would be riding ME rather than the teachers.

If only the teachers at Manchester High had spines and told Bob and Barb that their son is a lazy idiot.

I also think that if you're in a Special Ed class, you're not eligible to be on the honour roll for that subject, don't diminish an achievement for the kids that are working REALLY hard and excelling in class just out of some bullshit feel good hugbox crap.

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

I went to public high school in an area of Connecticut where there were a lot of well-to-do pricks. Everyone was on honor roll. There was a "high honors" list, which still had an inordinate amount of people on it. Public schools don't really try to challenge kids.

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

He's probably OK at arithmetic. EG: X amount of Tugboat will buy me Y Lego high schools.

And that's the problem, schools have become too soft on kids (and also basically parrot factories, teaching kids how to pass exams to make the schools and education system look good, rather than teaching them how to survive!).

It's no wonder the Chinese and Indians are eating Western industry alive now (that and greedy, short-sighted politicians and their chummies).

His massive credit card debt says otherwise...

Does he have his own card? I've never had a credit card but AFAIK only the dodgiest credit card providers with phenomenal interest rates will give a card to an unemployed bum. If he's mooching off Barb would anything she has left when she dies go to her creditors? Chris might end up having to sell the house. All because he just had to have 8 Lego owls.

He has many. Whenever he maxes one out, he just gets another. And because he pays back the minimum this will continue until he can no longer pay the minimum and gets his legs broken by credit goons.

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

I don't know much about education, but I've heard that educational philosophy changed from teaching kids to be competent in academic subjects to focus on bolstering their self-esteem, so now we have kids that feel good about themselves but are less academically skilled than their parents. Like a wry observer noted, kids are dumb, and they feel good about it.

I'm not saying we should adopt the Japanese system and make kids go to school, and then take private lessons in the evening after school so they can pass their college entrance exams. Kids need to be kids, so somewhere between the Japanese and the American model of high school would be ideal.

I briefly worked for the Goldfish Card provider, Chris is a card provider's dream come true. They don't want sensible people who pay off the balance every month because there is no interest to be made that way, the likes of Chris will keep them around forever.

Well, he obviously failed potty training.

Does the US have the equivalent of wonga.co.uk? I could see Chris getting into really bad trouble with those sorts of guys if so...

Re: Our Pet Lolcow's academic achievements

How about being dragged by his feet through the halls?

Not sure, I'm British too, but I would be surprised if there isn't something like Wonga or Quick Quid available. That PS Quadruple could be his in under 15 minutes.
