he is a child and he shouldn't be punished too severely
Yeah see no. If he's a child then he shouldn't have a drivers license or be allowed to roam the city on his own. If the 'adult autistic child' defense is going to be used seriously again then shouldn't he be treated like a literal child?

Having it both ways is what's gotten him into this mess.

I almost want to ask my boss (a lawyer) about how this could play out, but I don't want to sound like a fucking lunatic.
I suppose you could offer a hypothetical "what would you do to defend someone who was obviously mentally ill but still competent to stand trial?" or something, just an idle 'what if?'

I'm sorry, but I just can't get over the fact that all of this was caused by SEGA making Sonic's arms fucking blue instead of peach. I thought all of the sperging about it on FaceBook was hilarious, but I can't believe his rage over such a tiny design change has actually landed him in prison! Chris really is the gift that keeps on giving.

It could just as easily have been a taser instead of mace. He requires serious consequences, for his own sake if not the community's.

You can only punish someone for the crime they committed, not for a theoretical alternative crime (it "could have been" a gun or a knife, too, but it wasn't).

In some ways, a diversionary programme might be more of a "serious consequence" for Chris than simple incarceration. He's never really been forced to get help before, let alone under close supervision. A suspended sentence with mandatory psychological/psychiatric evaluation and treatment overseen by a P&P officer might be more of a reality check for Chris than "three hots and a cot" in a correctional facility where he's pretty much left to his own devices throughout the day.

If your boss does low level criminal work then he deals with crazy low level shit like this on a daily basis. Massive numbers of people who have some kind of mental health/developmental issue come before the courts every year. Believe me, your boss will have come across crazier stuff than Chris's latest escapade (my daughter deals mainly with this kind of low level local court shit and the stories she comes home with on a weekly basis make Chris's actions seem almost rational by comparison).

Oh oh, also, if he mentions being arrested he needs to be very careful because the wrong wording could be considered an admission of guilt. Not that it matters with video evidence already hanging over him, but if he's planning to fight the charges somehow the last thing he needs is to put his foot in it so spectacularly.
An ordinary person would, but Chris
a) will think he is completely innocent and the victim of the situation. Any story he tells publicly is going to be spun to favour him to an incredible degree
b) has no filter. There are probably some stupid things he will say that he thinks will make him look innocent but actually make him look guilty. But he will say those things anyway to any cop, prosecutor, or judge who interrogates him, or just happens to vaguely look in his direction. He can't be stopped from doing that.

From now until his trial in February, the worse Chris could do is fuck a prostitute who had done the weed, in his car, and in the Walmart parking lot. If he gets away with that, the U.S. justice system is more messed up than him.

An unintended consequence of this is that a lot of times if you make bail your are no longer able to use the public defender because you are assumed to have the means to hire a private attorney. If he doesn't hire a good attorney again he will see some real time on a felony charge with a prior. They're being quite a bit more serious about this in Virginia than they would be here (which I support bur that's OT).

All bets are off as far as CWC's ability to stay out of prison in the future. He's clearly going off the rails as of late.

To be honest, if it wasn't Sonic's arm color then it would have been something else. Chris is a spoiled brat who thinks he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He could have just as easily been set off by someone telling him that he's not allowed to use the women's restroom or that he's not allowed to shoplift. Sort of like the asskicking he's due to receive for his behavior, Chris going back to jail was inevitable.

I'm actually really surprised neither of those have had Chris dealing with the local authorities.
